Next Nigerian Bundesliga breakout? 6 things to know about Francis Onyeka

Inside the Ursapharm-Arena in Elversberg on Saturday afternoon, Nigeria-eligible youngster Francis Onyeka took another important step in his young career, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder started for SV Elversberg against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, then helped the promoted club produce one of the shocks of the opening weekend. Elversberg beat Leverkusen 3-2 after taking a 3-0 lead. Onyeka created Lukas Petkov’s eighth-minute goal against the club that still owns his registration.

The match was more than a good debut. It brought Onyeka’s name into a wider conversation in Nigeria because he has Nigerian roots but has played his youth football for Germany.

His path has been built in Germany from a very young age. Onyeka joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 at seven years old after starting with SC Borussia Lindenthal-Hohenlind in Cologne. He moved through Leverkusen’s youth system and won the gold Fritz Walter Medal in the under-17 category in 2024, an award given to Germany’s leading young player.

The move to senior football has also produced strong numbers. Leverkusen loaned Onyeka to VfL Bochum for the 2025-26 season. He played 30 matches in the 2. Bundesliga and scored eight goals, with one assist. That experience gave him regular football against senior players and helped him move closer to the Bundesliga level.

Now comes a bigger test. Leverkusen extended his contract until June 2032 before sending him to Elversberg for the 2026-27 season. The loan gives Onyeka a chance to play at Germany’s top level and build on his Bochum season. His first two competitive games have already produced three goal contributions, with two goals in the DFB-Pokal before his assist against Leverkusen.

He is a 19-year-old attacking midfielder

Onyeka, born on April 29, 2007, in Gummersbach, is an exciting attacking midfielder with growing flair on the ball. At 1.87 metres, he has the size to handle physical battles, while his left foot gives him another option when he plays between the lines.

His game is not limited to one position as he he can also play on the wing and as a centre-forward. That flexibility matters for a young player trying to earn regular Bundesliga minutes.

Leverkusen has developed him since he was seven

Onyeka’s connection with Bayer Leverkusen goes back more than a decade. He joined the club’s academy in 2014 and progressed through its youth teams.

He also reached the senior squad before his loan spells. Leverkusen included him in matchday squads during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. He played in the DFB-Pokal against Elversberg and also appeared in the Champions League against Red Bull Salzburg, although he did not make a Bundesliga appearance for Leverkusen.

The club’s decision to extend his contract to 2032 is a clear sign that Leverkusen sees a long-term future for him. Sporting director Simon Rolfes described his Bochum loan as a success and said the Elversberg spell can help him establish himself at Bundesliga level.

Germany has been his international home

Onyeka has followed the German youth pathway from an early age. He represented Germany at youth level and was part of the country’s under-19 team at the 2026 UEFA European Championship.

Bundesliga listed him with 13 Germany U19 appearances and 14 goals in July 2026. One of those goals came in dramatic fashion when he scored a stoppage-time winner against Ukraine to send Germany into the European Championship final.

His earlier progress also brought a major individual award. The DFB gave Onyeka the 2024 Fritz Walter Medal in gold at U17 level. Bayer Leverkusen’s list of past winners includes players such as Kai Havertz and Florian Wirtz.

Bochum gave him the senior football he needed

The 2025-26 loan to VfL Bochum was a major step. Onyeka moved there at 18 after captaining Leverkusen’s U19 side in the German championship final.

He finished the 2. Bundesliga campaign with eight goals in 30 league appearances. Those numbers are important because he produced them in senior football, not youth competition. It was a breakthrough season after leaving Leverkusen’s academy. That experience also prepared him for the physical and tactical demands of top-level football.

Elversberg is his Bundesliga opportunity

Leverkusen sent Onyeka to newly promoted Elversberg on a one-year loan for the 2026-27 season. He did not have to wait long to make an impact.

In the DFB-Pokal at MSV Duisburg on August 22, he scored in the 79th and 90th minutes of Elversberg’s 3-1 win. One week later, he started against Leverkusen and supplied the pass for Petkov’s eighth-minute opener.

Elversberg went on to beat Leverkusen 3-2 in its first Bundesliga match. Onyeka now has a full top-flight season ahead of him, with a chance to turn his strong start into regular Bundesliga football.

Onyeka remains eligible for Nigeria

Despite spending all his years in Germany, Onyeka remains eligible to play for Nigeria, the country of birth of his father. Since he has not played senior international football for Germany, his international future remains an open question.

His rise at Elversberg gives Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle another young attacking midfielder to consider as Nigeria look for more creativity in the next generation. With Alex Iwobi knocking on 30, Onyeka could be the player the Super Eagles turn to over the next decade for flair and creativity.
