Noah Atubolu has moved to play down growing transfer rumours, insisting he remains fully focused and happy at SC Freiburg despite strong interest from across Europe, Afrik-Foot reports.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper has been one of the most talked-about young players in the Bundesliga, with several major clubs reportedly tracking his progress ahead of a possible summer move in 2026.
In England, sides such as Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea FC, West Ham United and Manchester United have all been linked. Across Europe, interest has also been credited to Inter Milan, AC Milan and Napoli.
Despite the noise, Atubolu’s message has remained clear and consistent.
“I understand your question,” he told Merkur when asked about his transfer ambitions. “But I’ll say what I always say when I’m asked about my transfer ambitions: that I’m happy here, that I’m delighted every day by our success.
“That second leg against Genk, for example, was historic! For me, these international matches with Freiburg represent the big, wide world of football. The world where I’m currently in the best possible place.”

Atubolu’s recent decision to change representation to Epic agency has only added fuel to speculations, with many observers seeing it as a step towards a future high-profile move. But for now, Atubolu appears relaxed, grounded, and focused on Freiburg.
From academy talent to Freiburg’s defensive leader
Atubolu’s rise at Freiburg has been steady but impressive. Having spent over a decade within the club’s system, he has grown from a promising academy goalkeeper into one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable performers.
He stepped into the spotlight after replacing Mark Flekken as first-choice keeper during the 2023/24 season. While his early performances included a few mistakes, the club stood firmly behind him, trusting his long-term development.
That patience has paid off.
Under current manager Julian Schuster, Atubolu has matured into a calm and commanding presence. Freiburg’s defence has improved significantly, often described as a ‘fortress’ thanks to his growing confidence and organisation.

His record speaks loudly.
He became the first goalkeeper in Bundesliga history to save five consecutive penalties, a remarkable achievement that included stops against top players like Florian Wirtz. He also set a club record by going 609 minutes without conceding a goal, beating a long-standing mark set by Richard Golz.
In the 2025/26 season, he has continued to shine, registering multiple clean sheets in both the Bundesliga and the UEFA Europa League, with strong save percentages.
Standing at 6’3″, Atubolu fits the profile of a modern goalkeeper; quick reactions, confident with the ball at his feet, and capable of launching attacks with precise distribution. His style has even drawn comparisons to a young Manuel Neuer.
Off the pitch, he remains deeply connected to Freiburg, having even completed a voluntary social year working with youth players at the club. That connection helps explain why, despite growing interest, he feels at home.

Nigeria connection still alive amid Germany ambitions
While Atubolu’s club future is attracting attention, his international future is also a topic of growing interest, particularly in Nigeria.
The goalkeeper remains eligible to represent the Super Eagles due to his Nigerian heritage, despite progressing through Germany’s youth ranks.
He has featured at multiple youth levels for Germany, including U-17, U-19, U-20 and U-21 tournaments. However, he has not yet played a competitive senior match, which means he is still free to switch allegiance under FIFA rules.
In October 2025, Atubolu received his first senior call-up to Germany’s squad as a replacement for Oliver Baumann, but he did not make an appearance. That detail remains crucial.
His long-term ambition appears to lean towards Germany, with the goalkeeper publicly stating his desire to become the country’s number one and feature at the 2026 World Cup. However, Atubolu will likely be omitted from Julian Nagelsmann’s final World Cup squad, which could reopen the conversation. This presents a possible opportunity for Nigeria.
If Atubolu does not secure a competitive appearance for Germany soon, the Nigeria Football Federation could yet make another move to convince him to switch. But once he plays even a single competitive senior match for Germany, that door would close permanently.
