Nigeria’s greatest La Liga goalscorers ranked: Where Akor Adams, Finidi & Chukwueze stand

Nigerian striker Akor Adams has completed a permanent move from Spanish side Sevilla to newly promoted Serie A club Venezia, Afrik-Foot reports.

Adams’ transfer follows an impressive spell in La Liga that saw him become one of Nigeria’s highest-scoring players in the competition’s history.

The 26-year-old signed a five-year contract that will keep him at Venezia until June 2030, after the Italian club agreed a deal worth €17 million, with bonuses capable of taking the total package to €23 million. The transfer is the biggest signing in Venezia’s history.

Sevilla also made a huge financial gain from the move. The Spanish club signed Adams from French side Montpellier for just €5.5 million in January 2025 before selling him for more than three times that amount only 18 months later. The transfer also gives Sevilla more room under La Liga’s financial regulations to register new signings.

Adams featured 37 times in all competitions for Sevilla, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists. All 10 of his goals came during the 2025-26 La Liga season, where he finished as Sevilla’s leading league scorer.

His goals proved vital during a tough campaign for the Andalusian team. The Super Eagles forward scored dramatic late winners against Espanyol and Villarreal as Sevilla pulled away from the relegation battle to secure safety.

The striker’s impressive form in Spain also strengthened his place in the Super Eagles squad. Since making his breakthrough, Adams has scored six goals in 15 appearances for Nigeria and was a key part of the squad that won bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Adams leaves Spain as the ninth-highest Nigerian goalscorer in La Liga history with 10 league goals from 36 appearances.

Compatriot Obafemi Martins completes the top 10 after scoring seven goals in 21 La Liga matches for Levante. Adams moved ahead of the former Inter Milan striker thanks to his excellent campaign with Sevilla.

Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo sits eighth with 13 goals in 74 appearances during his time at Granada. Umar Sadiq occupies seventh place after scoring 15 goals across spells with Almería, Real Sociedad and Valencia.

Samuel Chukwueze ranks sixth with 21 goals in 155 La Liga appearances for Villarreal. The exciting winger became one of the finest signings for the Yellow Submarines before joining AC Milan after helping the Spanish club win the UEFA Europa League in 2021.

Mutiu Adepoju is fifth on the list with 22 goals from midfield during successful spells with Racing Santander and Real Sociedad. Known as “The Headmaster” because of his outstanding heading ability, Adepoju enjoyed a long and consistent career in Spain.

Kalu Uche comes fourth after scoring 38 goals in 148 league matches while representing Almería, Espanyol and Levante. Third place belongs to his brother Ikechukwu Uche, who scored 43 goals in 194 appearances across six different La Liga clubs: Recreativo Huelva, Getafe, Real Zaragoza, Villarreal, Granada and Málaga. His ability to score wherever he played made him a Nigerian icon of Spanish football

Finidi George shares the same tally of 43 goals but ranks second. The legendary winger produced those goals in 175 appearances for Real Betis and Mallorca. Finidi was one of the stars of Betis during the 1990s after arriving from Ajax, combining goals with countless assists and thrilling performances from the right wing.

At the top remains Christopher Ohenhen, whose remarkable record of 48 La Liga goals for SD Compostela has stood for decades. The powerful striker scored all his goals during a memorable spell with the club in the 1990s and remains Nigeria’s most prolific goalscorer in the history of Spain’s top flight.
