Ademola Lookman produced a performance full of courage and quality as Atlético Madrid edged past Barcelona in a dramatic UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie, Afrik-Foot reports.
Although Atlético lost 2-1 on the night at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, it was Lookman’s vital goal that sealed a 3-2 aggregate win and sent the Spanish side into the semi-finals for the first time since 2017.
The Nigerian forward stepped up at the most important moment. With Atlético already 2-0 down and the tie level on aggregate, tension filled the stadium. But in the 31st minute, Lookman showed the calmness of an elite forward in front of goal. He met a low cross from Marcos Llorente and finished neatly, restoring Atlético’s advantage and changing the direction of the tie.

It was not just about the goal. Lookman was one of the most dangerous players on the pitch throughout his time on it. He stretched Barcelona’s defence with his pace, linked up play well, and almost scored again early in the second half when his curling effort drifted just wide. Even when Atlético were under heavy pressure, he remained composed and disciplined, helping his team keep their shape before he was substituted.
Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh was quick to praise the winger after the match, highlighting both his influence and growth.
Writing on his X page, Oliseh said, “Ademola Lookman has just qualified for the Champions League semi-finals with Atlético Madrid. Despite a 2-1 loss to Barcelona. Talk about being an absolute influential player! I am extremely happy for Lookman. His goal today made the difference. He is also showing so much maturity that is quite remarkable.”

What next for Lookman and Atlético?
After overcoming Barcelona, Atlético now face an even tougher test against Arsenal or Sporting CP in the Champions League semi-finals.
The first leg will be played in Madrid before they travel to London for the return leg at the Emirates Stadium. It is another huge stage for Lookman, who now has the chance to write his name even deeper into European football history.

Beyond Europe, Atlético must quickly shift focus to their domestic duties. They remain in a strong position in La Liga, where they are favourites to make a top-four finish. Important matches against teams like Elche, Athletic Club, Valencia and Celta Vigo will test their squad depth and consistency.
There is also the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad to think about, a chance to win silverware and crown what is already shaping up to be a memorable season.
