Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles vs DR Congo: All to know about U23 AFCON qualifier

Published on by

Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles have been handed a difficult opening assignment on the road to the 2027 U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Central Africa’s DR Congo will battle Eric Chelle’s side in the second round of the qualifiers for the chance to advance to the third and final.

The U23 AFCON in Egypt will serve as Africa’s qualification tournament for the men’s football event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Nigeria, absent from the last two men’s Olympic football tournaments, have tasked coach Chelle with returning the country to the global.

When will Nigeria face DR Congo?

The two countries will meet over two legs during the November international window.

First leg: DR Congo U23 vs Nigeria U23, November 9, 2026

Second leg: Nigeria U23 vs DR Congo U23, November 17, 2026

DR Congo will host the opening match before travelling to Nigeria for the decisive return leg.

How did DR Congo reach Nigeria?

DR Congo had to fight through the opening qualifying round, overcoming Mauritania across two legs.

The Leopards suffered a 1-0 defeat to Mauritania in the first leg in Nouakchott on September 28, with Hamidou Diarra scoring the only goal after 10 minutes. That left DR Congo needing a response in Lubumbashi.

At the TP Mazembe Stadium on October 6, Mabete put DR Congo ahead in the 16th minute before Candidat Mapendo struck in the 78th minute. The 2-0 victory overturned the deficit and sent Guy Bukasa’s team through 2-1 on aggregate.

Nigeria’s Olympics Eagles, by contrast, were given a bye into the second round.

Why did Nigeria’s Olympics Eagles receive a bye?

CAF exempted 14 teams from the opening round based on their performances at the previous three editions of the U23 AFCON.

Nigeria were among those sides, meaning the Olympic Eagles did not have to play in September or October. Their first competitive assignment in the 2027 qualification campaign will therefore come against DR Congo.

Chelle, who led Nigeria to an impressive 3-3 draw with Russia on Tuesday, and his boys will be favourites against the Congolese.

Olympics Eagles, added responsibility for Eric Chelle?

The added responsibility of the Olympics Eagles could present a crowded November schedule for coach Eric Chelle.

The former Mali coach currently has responsibilities with both the Super Eagles and Olympic Eagles. Nigeria’s senior side are also scheduled to face Tanzania twice during the same November international window in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

That could create a significant selection and preparation problem. Chelle must balance the needs of the senior team with the Olympic Eagles, while also managing clubs’ demands for players during a congested international period.

Nigeria vs DR Congo: A rematch with painful memories

Super Eagles fans will not forget in a hurry the recent history between Nigeria and DR Congo.

The two countries met in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-off final in Rabat on November 16, 2025. Nigeria took the lead through Frank Onyeka in the third minute, but Meschack Elia equalised in the 32nd minute.

Neither side found a winner across 120 minutes. DR Congo eventually prevailed 4-3 on penalties, with Chancel Mbemba converting the decisive kick after goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu saved from Semi Ajayi. The victory sent DR Congo into the inter-confederation play-offs and ended Nigeria’s World Cup hopes.

Fresh evidence has pointed to an eligibility issue that should have compelled FIFA to disqualify DR Congo and hand the Super Eagles the playoff ticket.

The U23 meeting is an entirely different competition with different players, but the memory of that night in Rabat gives the November tie an unmistakable edge.

What happens if Nigeria beat DR Congo?

Victory over DR Congo will not send Nigeria directly to Egypt.

The 2027 U23 AFCON qualifying campaign has three knockout rounds. The 14 winners from the second round will advance to the final qualifying round, where seven two-legged ties will determine the remaining the nations that will join hosts Egypt at the U23 AFCON.

The first and return legs of the third round are scheduled for the weekends of March 22 and 30 next year.

Nigeria’s potential final-round opponent comes from the bracket involving Zambia and the winner of Sierra Leone vs Burkina Faso clash.

So the Olympic Eagles need to survive DR Congo in November and then win another two-legged tie in March to book their place at the U23 AFCON.

How does the U23 AFCON qualify teams for Los Angeles?

Egypt will host the 2027 U23 AFCON and therefore have an automatic place in the eight-team final tournament.

Seven other nations will qualify through the three-round knockout process. The eight-team tournament will form Africa’s main pathway to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The competition has historically served as Africa’s Olympic qualifying tournament, with the top three teams earning Olympic places. The same top-three Olympic pathway for the 2023 edition produced Egypt, Morocco and Mali as Africa’s representatives at Paris 2024.

Qualification for Egypt is, therefore, only half the battle for all the countries involved. Nigeria’s Dream Team would thereafter need to finish in the top three positions at the tournament to secure an Olympic ticket.

Nigeria’s Olympic drought

Nigeria’s Dream Team have a proud Olympic football history. The country won gold at Atlanta 1996, becoming the first African nation to win the men’s Olympic football tournament.

Nigeria later claimed silver at Beijing 2008 and bronze at Rio 2016, making the country Africa’s most decorated nation in the men’s Olympic football competition.

But the Olympic Eagles have not reached the men’s tournament since Rio 2016.

Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2020 and 2024 editions after missing the relevant U23 AFCON tournaments. Their most recent disappointment came in March 2023, when Guinea eliminated Nigeria 2-0 on aggregate in the final qualifying round for the U23 AFCON in Morocco.
