Nigeria’s penalty-saving goalkeeper: The Super Eagles option breaking Bundesliga records

Noah Atubolu is giving Nigeria another reason to wonder what might have been, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper is now the Bundesliga’s penalty-saving record holder and has continued his remarkable run after moving from Freiburg to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan.

Atubolu has saved his last six penalties in Germany’s top flight. His latest came on September 12, when he denied Nadiem Amiri in the first half of Frankfurt’s 3-1 win at Mainz. That followed the five straight penalties he stopped at Freiburg, a Bundesliga record set in September 2025.

The twist for Nigeria is that Atubolu holds Nigerian citizenship alongside German citizenship and has never played for Germany’s senior team. He represented Germany extensively at youth level, including 22 Under-21 appearances, but that does not by itself prevent a switch to Nigeria under FIFA’s eligibility rules.

The secret behind Atubolu’s penalty record

Atubolu’s numbers are not simply the product of guessing correctly.

Transfermarkt’s report on his extraordinary record points to a goalkeeper who treats penalties as a specialised part of his preparation. He studies the situation, works on penalties regularly and has developed a routine built around repetition and confidence.

Freiburg expert Michael Schröder explained that Atubolu trains penalties in almost every session and does not stop until he has produced a good save. That matters because a penalty is not only about the final dive. The goalkeeper must read the taker, commit quickly and trust the decision once the ball is struck.

Atubolu also benefits from detailed preparation within Freiburg’s goalkeeping group. After saving his fifth straight Bundesliga penalty against Werder Bremen in September 2025, he said the goalkeepers discussed penalties before every match. He credited the group rather than treating the record as a personal achievement.

The sequence shows how effective that preparation became. Josip Juranović and Kevin Volland were denied against Union Berlin in May 2024. Florian Wirtz failed against him in December 2024, André Silva was stopped in February 2025 and Romano Schmid became the fifth victim in September. Atubolu then added Amiri to the list at Mainz.

His mentality is just as important. Atubolu has developed a reputation for staying calm in high-pressure moments, while Freiburg’s environment has allowed him to learn from mistakes instead of being punished for them. That combination of repetition, preparation and composure has turned a goalkeeper skill into a genuine speciality.

Why Nigeria could have used Atubolu

Nigeria already know the value of a goalkeeper who can change a shootout.

Stanley Nwabali saved two penalties against South Africa in the 2024 AFCON semi-final, sending Nigeria into the final. Two years later, he again saved two against Egypt as Nigeria won the 2025 AFCON third-place playoff 4-2 on penalties.

Yet Nigeria also have a painful reminder of how decisive one goalkeeper can be. The Super Eagles drew 1-1 with DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup African play-off final in Rabat before losing 4-3 on penalties. DR Congo goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu was introduced specifically for the shootout and saved two attempts.

That is where an established penalty specialist such as Atubolu would have offered another weapon. His record does not guarantee a shootout win, but six consecutive Bundesliga penalty saves against elite-level takers show that he has a repeatable method rather than a one-off hot streak.

Nigeria therefore have an unusual situation on their hands. Their current No. 1 has already produced major penalty-shootout moments, while a Nigerian-eligible goalkeeper is building one of the most unusual penalty records in European football.

Atubolu has chosen Germany so far and has spoken about his ambition to become Germany’s senior goalkeeper. But until he plays an official senior match for the DFB, the door to Nigeria is not automatically closed.
