Nigeria vs Portugal: How Super Eagles can stop Ronaldo, shock World Cup-bound Selecao

Published on by

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face one of world football’s biggest tests when they take on Portugal in an international friendly on Wednesday, June 10, at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, Afrik-Foot reports.

Although the match is officially a friendly, there is much more at stake for both teams. Portugal are using the game as their final preparation before beginning their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against DR Congo. Roberto Martínez’s side arrive with a full-strength squad that includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leão and several members of the Paris Saint-Germain team that recently won the UEFA Champions League.

On the flip side, the fixture offers Nigeria an opportunity to measure themselves against one of Europe’s strongest teams after missing out on qualification for the World Cup. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle will also be eager to see how his players respond after their recent 2-2 draw against Poland, a match in which Nigeria showed attacking quality but also exposed defensive weaknesses.

The memories of the last meeting between both countries remain fresh. In November 2022, Portugal defeated Nigeria 4-0 in Lisbon, with former Porto manager Jose Peseiro in charge of the Super Eagles at the time. Wednesday’s encounter gives Nigeria a chance to show how much progress has been made since that painful defeat.

The danger Ronaldo poses for the Super Eagles

At 41 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo remains the focal point of Portugal’s attack. While he may no longer sprint past defenders as he once did, his movement inside the penalty area remains among the best in football.

Ronaldo arrives in Leiria after another impressive season with Al-Nassr, scoring 28 league goals in 30 matches and helping the Saudi club win the league title. He has also remained productive for Portugal, scoring five goals in five recent international appearances.

The Portuguese captain’s greatest strength is his ability to find space in crowded penalty areas. Even when defenders appear to have him under control, he often drifts between centre-backs at exactly the right moment. His timing, finishing and heading ability make him dangerous from crosses, corners and free-kicks.

Nigeria must also worry about the players supplying him. Bruno Fernandes consistently creates chances with through balls and long passes, while Bernardo Silva’s intelligence and Rafael Leão’s pace can stretch any defence. If those players are given time and space, Ronaldo usually gets opportunities.

Another factor is motivation. Ronaldo is chasing the historic milestone of 1,000 career goals and will want to sharpen his form before Portugal’s World Cup opener. Even in friendlies, he rarely approaches games with anything less than full intensity.

How Super Eagles can stop Ronaldo

Nigeria’s first task is to deny Ronaldo service rather than focusing solely on marking him. The Super Eagles cannot allow Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva to dictate play from midfield.

Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka could have crucial roles in disrupting Portugal’s rhythm. By pressing Fernandes aggressively and cutting passing lanes into Ronaldo, Nigeria can reduce the number of dangerous balls reaching the striker.

The centre-back partnership of Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi must stay compact throughout the game. One of the mistakes Nigeria made against Poland was allowing gaps to appear between defenders. Against Ronaldo, even a small opening can lead to a goal.

The full-backs must also be disciplined. Portugal’s attacks often start from wide areas through players such as Nuno Mendes and Diogo Dalot. Bruno Onyemaechi, Zaidu Sanusi, Abdullahi Bewene or any Nigerian wing-back selected must focus on stopping crosses before they enter the box.

Set-piece discipline will be equally important. Ronaldo remains one of the most dangerous aerial threats in international football. Nigeria must avoid unnecessary fouls around the penalty area and remain organised during corners and free-kicks.

Above all, concentration must remain high for the full 90 minutes. Ronaldo has built his career on punishing brief lapses in focus, especially late in matches when defenders become tired.

How Nigeria can beat Portugal

Defending well is only part of the challenge. If Nigeria want to win, they must also hurt Portugal when opportunities arise.

The Super Eagles’ biggest weapon is speed in transition. Portugal’s full-backs often push high up the pitch, leaving space behind them. When Nigeria regain possession, quick passes into the channels could create openings for attackers such as Terem Moffi, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze and Paul Onuachu.

Rather than trying to dominate possession, Chelle may prefer a compact defensive shape before launching fast counter-attacks. Portugal are likely to control much of the ball, making efficiency on the break essential.

Nigeria must also make better use of set pieces. Players such as Bassey, Ajayi and Onuachu provide significant aerial power. Corners and free-kicks could offer the best route to goal against a technically superior Portuguese side.

The midfield battle will be another key area. Raphael Onyedika, Ndidi and Tom Dele-Bashiru must match Portugal’s intensity and prevent long spells of pressure. Winning second balls and limiting turnovers will be vital.

If Nigeria remain organised defensively, frustrate Ronaldo, disrupt Fernandes’ influence and attack quickly whenever possession is won, the Super Eagles can give Portugal a far tougher contest than the 4-0 defeat suffered four years ago. The challenge is enormous, but a disciplined and clinical performance could produce one of Nigeria’s most impressive results in recent years.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7:45pm WAT.
