Nigeria begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar on Friday, September 25, with the Super Eagles looking to make a strong start in Group L, Afrik-Foot reports.

Éric Chelle’s side will welcome the Barea to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, with kick-off scheduled for 5:00 PM Nigerian time.

The encounter marks Nigeria’s first competitive fixture since their third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and the Super Eagles will be aiming to avoid an early setback in a group where only one qualification place is available outside co-host Tanzania.

Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at AFCON 2027 because they are one of the three hosts, alongside Kenya and Uganda. That leaves Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau competing for the remaining qualification spot in Group L.

Nigeria will also be without Victor Osimhen for the opening two qualifiers after the Galatasaray striker was ruled out with a right adductor injury. Taiwo Awoniyi has been brought in as his replacement.

The Super Eagles will be looking to improve on their most recent competitive meeting with Madagascar, when the Barea stunned Nigeria with a 2-0 victory at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

Nigeria have otherwise won three of the five previous meetings between the countries, with one draw and one Madagascar victory.

With Osimhen unavailable, the spotlight will fall on the likes of Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare and Awoniyi as Nigeria look to begin their qualification campaign with three points.

For Madagascar, it was initially reported that Estac Troyes goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher was removed from the squad after some of his old interviews surfaced. In those videos, the 34-year-old mentioned he’d never play for the Barea, as he’s French through and through.

Still, he was seen training with other Malagasy goalkeepers in Uyo. Whether or not he’ll start is currently unknown.
