In a thrilling encounter in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on Saturday, KRC Genk triumphed 3-2 on the road against Cercle Brugge, thanks to standout performances from Nigerian players Collins Yira Sor and Tolu Arokodare.
The duo played a pivotal role, with the former scoring one goal and assisting two, and the latter sealing the victory with a second-half strike.
It took just 60 seconds for former Flying Eagles forward Sor to make his mark.
The Nigerian opened the scoring for Genk in the very first minute of the match, setting the tone for what would be an action-packed first half.
Nigerian connection extinguishes Cercle Brugge fightback
Cercle Brugge responded swiftly, pulling back level in the 11th minute, only for Genk to regain their lead five minutes later, with Sor once again in the thick of things.
Having scored the opener, the Nigerian winger turned provider this time, squaring the ball to give Genk a 2-1 advantage.
The visitors' joy was short-lived, though, as Cercle Brugge quickly hit back once more, making it 2-2 just two minutes later to round off a thrilling opening 20 minutes.
Things quieted down after that, but soon after the half-time break, Genk got the goal that would prove to be the winner.
Arokodare, who had missed an earlier chance, latched onto a cross by Sor, finishing coolly to give Genk a 3-2 lead.
It was Arokodare’s fifth goal of the season in just six matches, further solidifying his reputation as one of the top strikers in the league. Sor’s contributions were equally impressive, with his goal being his first of the season and his assist marking his fourth of the campaign.
With this victory, Genk maintained their position at the top of the Belgian Pro League table, having amassed 13 points from their first six matches of the season.
