Chippa United return: 3 reasons Stanley Nwabali’s move could save his Super Eagles career

Published on by

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba believes Stanley Nwabali has made the right decision by returning to Chippa United, Afrik-Foot reports.

Aiyenugba is convinced that the move gives Nwabali the perfect chance to restart his club career after spending several months without competitive football.

Nwabali recently rejoined the South African Betway Premiership side just five months after leaving the club by mutual consent. His return ended months of uncertainty after several transfer talks with clubs in Europe, North Africa and other African countries failed to produce a permanent move.

The 29-year-old came to national prominence following his outstanding performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where he helped the Super Eagles reach the final before losing to hosts Côte d’Ivoire. The former Enyimba man was also Nigeria’s first-choice at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite the growing reputation, Nwabali was unable to secure a transfer and remained without a club after ending his first spell at Chippa United in February 2026.

Aiyenugba believes returning to a familiar environment was the smartest decision under the circumstances.

“I think Stanley Nwabali has made the right decision. After staying out of competitive football for some time, returning to a club where he is respected and understands the environment is a positive move,” Aiyenugba said as per Sports247.

The former Bnei Yehuda goalkeeper admitted he was not fully aware of the reasons behind Nwabali’s departure earlier this year but insisted that both player and club already understand each other.

According to Aiyenugba, regular playing time is the biggest priority for any goalkeeper, especially one hoping to remain Nigeria’s first-choice shot-stopper ahead of future international matches.

“Chippa United already know his qualities and what he can offer. Sometimes the most important thing for a goalkeeper is to play consistently, and this move gives him that opportunity again,” he added.

Nwabali is now expected to begin pre-season training with Chippa United as the club prepares for the new Betway Premiership campaign while he also targets a return to Nigeria’s starting line-up.

Nwabali: Why returning to Chippa United could prove to be the right decision

Nwabali’s return offers immediate stability after a difficult five-month spell without club football. Since leaving Chippa United in February 2026, the goalkeeper had been searching for a new team but failed to complete moves despite attracting interest from several clubs, including Tanzanian giants Simba SC.

Instead of remaining without competitive football, the move gives him an instant opportunity to regain match fitness and return to playing every week. Regular minutes are essential for goalkeepers because sharpness, confidence and decision-making often come from consistent competition rather than training alone.

The transfer could also strengthen his chances of reclaiming Nigeria’s number-one jersey. During his period without a club, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle left Nwabali out of recent international friendlies against Poland and Portugal. Chelle instead handed opportunities to Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, while newly eligible Arthur Okonkwo also entered the picture for a place in the squad.

By playing regularly again in South Africa, Nwabali can prove he deserves another chance to become Nigeria’s number-one before upcoming international fixtures and major tournaments.

Another advantage is that he returns to an environment where he already feels comfortable. Since joining Chippa United in 2022, Nwabali made more than 60 league appearances for the club and became one of the Betway Premiership’s most reliable goalkeepers.

The club’s coaches, management and supporters already know his strengths, meaning he can settle quickly without needing months to adapt to a new country, league or style of football. That familiarity should allow him to focus entirely on his performances rather than adjusting to a different football culture.

The move may not have been the glamorous European transfer many expected after the Africa Cup of Nations, but it provides Nwabali something even more important at this stage of his career; regular football, stability and a realistic opportunity to rebuild his momentum for both club and country.
