Noah Atubolu’s growing involvement with Germany’s senior national team has raised fresh questions about whether the NFF can still convince the Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper to represent the Super Eagles.
The 24-year-old has been on Germany’s radar for some time after establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s promising goalkeepers at SC Freiburg.
Although he has represented Germany extensively at youth level, including 22 appearances for the Under-21 team, Atubolu has yet to make his senior international debut.

His situation became interesting in September 2026 when new Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp included him in his squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures against Serbia and Greece.
Atubolu was named among the substitutes for both matches but did not come off the bench. Consequently, his involvement has not made him ineligible to represent Nigeria.
Why Noah Atubolu can still play for the Super Eagles despite Germany call-ups
FIFA’s international eligibility regulations distinguish between being selected for a national team and actually representing on the pitch.
A player does not become permanently tied to a country simply because he receives a senior call-up or sits on the bench during an international fixture.

The crucial issue is whether he has played in an official senior international match for that country.
Atubolu has not done so for Germany. His appearances for the country’s youth teams, including the Under-21 side, also do not prevent him from representing another eligible nation.
The goalkeeper was born in Freiburg, Germany, on May 25, 2002, to Nigerian parents. He holds Nigerian citizenship alongside his German nationality, giving him the necessary connection to represent the West African country.
FIFA’s regulations allow players with multiple nationalities to represent an association with which they have the required nationality and qualifying connection, subject to the applicable eligibility rules.
Frankfurt move puts Atubolu in the spotlight again
Atubolu’s international situation is garnering attention as his club career continues to progress.
After spending 11 years in Freiburg’s system, he joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan on August 28, 2026, with a conditional purchase obligation included in the agreement.

He arrived with an impressive record, having made 125 competitive appearances for Freiburg’s first team, keeping 38 clean sheets and helping the club reach the 2025/26 Europa League final.
He also established himself as a specialist penalty saver, stopping five consecutive penalties in the Bundesliga before extending that record to six with a save against Nadiem Amiri in September 2026.
For Nigeria, the goalkeeper remains an interesting option as the Super Eagles continue to assess their long-term goalkeeping options.
However, Atubolu’s continued selection by Germany suggests that the European country remains firmly in his international picture.

With Manuel Neuer and Ter Stegen out of the picture for Die Mannschaft, it appears Atubolu is awaiting his turn in the ranks with Klopp’s side, rather than joining Eric Chelle’s Green and Whites, who already boast the presence of Stanley Nwabali, Arthur Okonkwo and Maduka Okoye, who was also born in Germany.
