NPFL 2023 top scorers: Bayelsa United player ahead of the pack

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) officially wrapped up for the year on Thursday 28th December. Players will go on a Christmas break, with the league resuming on 10th January. With that in mind, would you like to know who scored the most goals in 2023?

NPFL top scorers this season

First of all, let's take a look at the top scorers in the current NPFL campaign. As it stands, most teams have played 16 league games so far, and only two players have hit double-digit figures. Remo Stars' Sikiru Alimi currently leads the standings this season. He scored 11 of his team's 23 goals so far, and has been one of the main reasons why Remo Stars are at the top of the NPFL table.

Behind Alimi is Bayelsa United's Robert Mizo, who has 10 goals to his name this campaign. Interestingly, Mizo had the opportunity to score his eleventh goal this week, but failed to convert from the spot in a 2-1 loss to Enyimba.

Up until the second week of December, Plateau United's Albert Hilary had scored just one goal this season. However, the 18 year old player shot his way up the goal-scoring charts, as he found the net six times in Plateau United's last four matches of the year. Hilary has now scored in four consecutive league matches, and will look to catch up with the top two players before the season runs out.

  • 11- Sikiru Alimi (Remo Stars)
  • 10 – Robert Mizo (Bayelsa United)
  • 7 – Albert Hilary (Plateau United)
  • 6 – Bashiru Usman (Niger Tornadoes)
  • 5 – Jonathan Alukwu (Sporting Lagos)

NPFL top scorers in 2023

Although Robert Mizo currently trails Sikiru Alimi by a lone goal, he has actually been the top scorer in 2023. The Bayelsa United forward found the net nine times between January to May, and 10 times this season, bringing his tally for the year to 19 goals.

With 16 goals, Chukwuemeka Obioma comes second. The 25 year old was in sensational form last season, scoring 16 times between January and May. Obioma's goals helped Enyimba win their ninth NPFL title, and those 16 goals were enough to win the golden boot.

These are the top five scorers in the NPFL in 2023:

  • 19 – Robert Mizo
  • 16 – Chukwuemeka Obioma
  • 12 – Sikiru Alimi
  • 11 – Chijioke Mbaoma
  • 10 – Lukman Bello
