Nwaneri’s Dortmund debut: 5 things Super Eagles fans should know about Arsenal star

Ethan Nwaneri has started his Borussia Dortmund loan with a moment that will attract plenty of attention in Nigeria, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 19-year-old Arsenal midfielder came off the bench in Dortmund’s Bundesliga meeting with Hoffenheim on Saturday as Niko Kovac’s side fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at the SNP Arena. Nwaneri was introduced after around 30 minutes and played a part in the late winner, with his effort helping force Albian Hajdari into scoring an own goal four minutes from full time.

The performance matters beyond Dortmund. Nwaneri is eligible to play for Nigeria through his family background, has already attracted the attention of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle and has yet to play senior international football for England. That leaves a door open for Nigeria, even though he has spent much of his young career with England’s national teams.

His Dortmund move also gives him a fresh stage. Arsenal sent him to Germany on a season-long loan after he spent part of the previous campaign with Marseille. Dortmund wanted the attacking midfielder after a knee injury to summer signing Giannis Konstantelias created a need for another creative player.

1. Nwaneri has Nigerian roots and Chelle wants him

Nwaneri was born in London on March 21, 2007, to a Nigerian father and an English-French mother. He has openly spoken about his Nigerian identity, telling an interviewer: “I’m Nigerian.”

Chelle has also taken a personal interest. The Nigeria coach watched Nwaneri during Marseille’s 3-0 Coupe de France victory over Rennes in February. Reports later said Chelle’s camp had contacted representatives of the youngster about the possibility of playing for Nigeria. The key point is that Nwaneri has not played senior football for England, so Nigeria still has a route to him.

2. He is Arsenal’s record-breaking teenager

Nwaneri made history on September 18, 2022, when Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta sent him on against Brentford. He was only 15 years and 181 days old, making him the youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League. Arsenal won 3-0 that day.

He later became the first player born in 2007 to score in the Premier League when he struck against Nottingham Forest in November 2024. By the time he left for Dortmund, he had made 34 Premier League appearances for Arsenal.

3. England has already invested heavily in him

Nwaneri’s international history is a major reason Nigeria face a difficult battle. He has represented England at several youth levels and was part of the England Under-21 team that won the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. His England youth record includes goals at U17, U19 and U21 level.

However, he has not yet played for England’s senior team. That distinction keeps the Nigeria possibility alive. His situation is similar to other dual-national players who have had to decide whether to commit their international future to Nigeria or another country.

4. Dortmund is his chance to play more senior football

Dortmund completed Nwaneri’s loan on September 1, with the midfielder joining for the 2026-27 season. He had spent the second half of last term at Marseille, where he scored twice in nine Ligue 1 appearances.

The Bundesliga provides a different challenge. Dortmund are also competing in the Champions League, giving Nwaneri a chance to develop in one of Europe’s strongest competitions. His first Bundesliga appearance came only four days after completing the move.

5. He already made an impact against Hoffenheim

Nwaneri’s Dortmund debut could hardly have been more dramatic. Hoffenheim led 2-0 after 54 minutes, with Leon Avdullahu and Tim Lemperle scoring. Dortmund then fought back through Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva before Hajdari turned the ball into his own net in the 86th minute.

Nwaneri’s involvement came in the decisive phase. His effort helped create the pressure that led to Hajdari’s own goal. Dortmund therefore left Sinsheim with a 3-2 victory and two wins from two Bundesliga matches.

Nigerian fans will watch to see if Nwaneri’s next major breakthrough come with Dortmund, England or eventually the Super Eagles.
