Okoye vs Nwabali: 3 things that could decide Nigeria’s next No. 1

Nigeria’s goalkeeping debate is heating up again with Maduka Okoye’s return to full training at Udinese putting fresh pressure on Stanley Nwabali, Afrik-Foot reports

For much of the last two years, Nwabali has occupied the No. 1 position with relatively little serious competition. His performances at AFCON 2023 helped restore stability to a position that had become a source of concern for Nigeria, and Eric Chelle continued to trust him after taking charge of the Super Eagles.

However, that could change. Okoye returned to full training earlier this month after recovering from a shoulder injury that ruled him out of Udinese’s pre-season preparations. Before the setback, he had already strengthened his case with impressive performances for Nigeria against Poland and Portugal.

The Udinese goalkeeper now has an opportunity to turn that momentum into a sustained challenge for Nwabali’s position, but the decision may not be as simple as choosing the goalkeeper with the bigger reputation or the better reflexes.

Chelle will have to determine which goalkeeper best fits what Nigeria need at this stage.

Interestingly, Okoye’s latest interview with The Guardian offers some clues about the direction of his development and the qualities he believes define elite goalkeeping.

Three factors that could ultimately decide Nigeria’s next No. 1.

1. Who arrives in better form?

The first and most obvious factor is form. Nwabali enters the battle with an important advantage: trust and longevity.

He has been Nigeria’s established first choice for a significant period, meaning Chelle already knows what he can offer and how he performs in the Super Eagles setup.

Okoye, however, has shown that the gap may have narrowed. His displays against Poland and Portugal before his shoulder injury provided an important reminder of his ability, while his return to training at Udinese means he now has an opportunity to build momentum before the September qualifiers.

The timing is particularly important because club football will resume before Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying fixtures.

Every match could therefore become part of Chelle’s assessment. A strong start from Nwabali has reinforced his position, but a convincing run from Okoye could make the decision much more difficult.

The goalkeeper who produces the stronger performances in the weeks immediately before the international break may ultimately have the advantage.

2. Which goalkeeper gives Chelle more control?

Goalkeeping at the highest level is no longer simply about stopping shots. Modern goalkeepers are expected to influence the game through positioning, distribution, decision-making, command of the penalty area and their ability to deal with situations before they become chances.

Okoye’s comments about Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón suggest that he understands this evolution.

Asked by The Guardian which goalkeeper impressed him most at the recent World Cup, Okoye did not choose because they produced spectacular saves.

Instead, he highlighted Simón’s ability to remain involved in matches and deal with the less glamorous details of goalkeeping.

“I found Spain’s Unai Simón very impressive, especially towards the final stages,” Okoye said.

“Not so much for making hundreds of saves, but for the way he remained inside the game, defending deep balls against France. For me, that was goalkeeping of the highest level.”

For Nigeria, those details could be important. Chelle may want a goalkeeper capable of defending space behind the defensive line, dealing confidently with crosses and long balls and remaining involved even when Nigeria dominate possession.

Okoye’s development will be worth watching beyond the number of saves he makes.

Nwabali, meanwhile, has already established his value to Nigeria through the stability he has brought to the position, and his penalty-stopping excellence gives him a clear edge.

3. Who can handle the pressure of the No. 1 shirt?

The final factor could be mental as much as technical. Competition for Nigeria’s goalkeeping position has not always been healthy.

For a long while, the country has struggled to establish a clear successor to Vincent Enyeama, with several goalkeepers enjoying short spells before losing their places.

Okoye had his time in the limelight as well, but he quickly learned how brutal Nigerian fans can be if goalkeepers commit errors, and that forced him to take a break from the National team.

Nwabali changed that dynamic. His emergence gave Nigeria a goalkeeper who could settle into the position and build confidence over time.

Still, Okoye’s return creates a different challenge. For Nwabali, the pressure is now to prove that his position is deserved rather than assumed.

For Okoye, the challenge is to show that his resurgence can be sustained and that he is ready to take responsibility for one of the most scrutinised positions in Nigerian football.

The goalkeeper who responds better to that pressure could have the advantage.

Okoye’s experience also gives him a different perspective. He has played in the Netherlands, England and Italy and has experienced setbacks that have forced him to rebuild his career.

“I believe there is always room for improvement in every direction,” Okoye said.

“I’m very happy working here with a great goalkeeping staff. I’m on a good path, learning every day, and I can’t wait to show it on the pitch during the season.”

Okoye vs Nwabali: Chelle has a selection headache

The biggest winner from the Okoye-Nwabali debate is the Nigerian National team, who now have two goalkeepers who are at the top of their game.

For Chelle, the return of Okoye means he no longer has to rely on one established option while hoping the goalkeeper maintains his level.

The next few weeks could determine which advantage matters most. If Nwabali maintains his level while Okoye struggles to regain full rhythm after his shoulder injury, Chelle’s decision could remain straightforward.

But if Okoye returns strongly for Udinese and demonstrates the qualities he highlighted when discussing Unai Simón, particularly his ability to stay involved in games and play out from the back, the Super Eagles coach may develop a selection headache, and that is exactly the kind of problem Nigeria should want.

The next No. 1 should not be decided by reputation, history or sentiment. It should be decided by who is performing better, who best fits Chelle’s tactical demands and who can handle the responsibility of wearing the green and white shirt of Nigeria.

For now, Stanley Nwabali still has the shirt, but Maduka Okoye is back in the race.
