Onuachu: Does latest Turkish interest suit struggling lighthouse?

Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu has been linked with a move from English Premier League side Southampton to Turkey — and not for the first time.

The links have been coming in thick and fast in recent weeks, and the latest one could finally mark the end of his tumultuous stay at St. Mary’s Stadium, potentially paving the way for a return to the Turkish Süper Lig.

Onuachu’s career has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows over the past two seasons. The towering Nigerian forward joined Trabzonspor on loan from Southampton for the 2023/24 campaign, where he flourished in the Turkish Super Lig, amassing an impressive 21 goal contributions (17 goals and four assists) in just 25 appearances.

His performances rekindled hopes of a revival upon his return to Southampton for the 2024/25 season.

However, reality hasn’t been as kind. With just 152 minutes of football played so far this campaign, Onuachu is struggling to make an impact at the English club. Reports of Besiktas' interest in the striker have reignited discussions about his future.

But does a move back to Turkey make sense for all involved?

Onuachu: A lifeline to reignite his career

Onuachu’s struggles at Southampton have been evident, and a return to Turkey could be exactly what he needs to revive his career.

The Turkish Super Lig has already proven to be a fertile ground for his skills, as evidenced by his outstanding performances at Trabzonspor. Regular minutes on the pitch would allow him to rediscover the rhythm and confidence that made him a feared striker.

Besiktas, a club with a rich history and frequent participation in European competitions, could provide Onuachu with the platform to showcase his talents on a larger stage.

For Besiktas: An investment worth making?

Besiktas’ pursuit of Onuachu seems strategically sound.

The club could benefit immensely from a player of his stature and scoring pedigree, especially as they look to strengthen their squad for domestic and European campaigns.

Currently sixth in the Süper Lig standings and 18 points adrift of first-placed Galatasaray, Besiktas are unlikely to challenge for the league title this season.

However, with 25 goals scored in 16 games, the club could use reinforcements in attack to bolster their push for UEFA Europa League or Conference League qualification.

While Ciro Immobile leads the team with nine goals in 13 appearances, Onuachu’s aerial prowess and physicality could add a new dimension to their attack, particularly against defensively solid opponents.

Onuachu's impressive stint at Trabzonspor leaves little doubt about his capacity to thrive in the league. His familiarity with the Süper Lig makes him a low-risk option for Besiktas, ensuring he could adapt quickly to their system.

Reports suggest that Southampton have set a price of €12 million (£10.3 million) for Onuachu. Considering his limited role at the English club, Besiktas might negotiate a favourable deal.

A mid-season addition like Onuachu could not only boost their attack but also be a prudent investment for both short- and long-term success.
