Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has officially secured the 2025/26 English Championship title with Coventry City, following a dominant 5-1 victory over Portsmouth at the Building Society Arena on Tuesday evening, Afrik-Foot reports.
While their promotion to the Premier League was confirmed last week following a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, Coventry still needed to formalize their status as champions of the English second tier.
They did so in style, courtesy of goals from Haji Wright, Ephron Mason-Clark, and Kaine Kesler-Hayden, alongside a Regan Poole own goal. Onyeka featured for 64 minutes before being replaced by Victor Torp.

Super Eagles duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi were integral members of the Leicester City squad that clinched the EFL Championship title during the 2023/24 season.
While Ndidi played a pivotal role in the midfield, Iheanacho featured more sporadically. This marked his final season with the Foxes before his departure for Sevilla.

Danny Shittu is among the few Nigerians to have secured promotion to the Premier League as a champion. Joining QPR from Millwall midway through the 2010/11 season, Shittu appeared in seven matches during the club’s successful title charge. The veteran defender earned 33 caps for Nigeria throughout his international career.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme also experienced Championship glory. A lifelong Wolves servant, Ikeme helped the club gain promotion to the top flight in the 2008/09 season.
Although he made 12 appearances during that campaign, he spent the following season on various loan deals before eventually returning to become Wolves’ first-choice keeper in 2012.
4. Shola Ameobi (Newcastle United)

Ameobi was a key figure in Newcastle United’s immediate return to the Premier League in the 2009/10 season. He enjoyed a prolific campaign, registering 10 goals and three assists in just 18 Championship appearances.
He maintained that form in the top flight the following year, recording 12 goal contributions. Ameobi represented Nigeria nine times, scoring twice.
5. Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Portsmouth)

Legendary striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni tasted Championship success during his very first year in English football. After joining Portsmouth from Maccabi Haifa, “The Yak” hit the ground running, netting seven goals in 14 games to seal promotion.
He seamlessly transitioned to the Premier League, where he became a household name after scoring 16 goals in his debut top-flight season.
