Olympique Lyonnais is preparing to discipline one-time Super Eagles invitee Gift Orban after his recent social media post stirred up anger among Lyon supporters and management.
Orban’s post, which included a “Top” comment and two fire emojis, praised Ivorian striker Sinaly Diamonde’s performance—unintentionally applauding the very player who scored and assisted against Lyon in their heated 2-2 draw with AJ Auxerre.
The fallout has since placed the 22-year-old at the centre of controversy, with a Lyon sanction looming.
Following the game, Orban’s post, intended as friendly encouragement for Diamonde, ignited serious outrage from Lyon fans, who saw the praise as a slight to their club.
Lyon set to sanction Gift Orban over social media misstep
Realising the uproar, Orban quickly clarified his stance, explaining to the fans that his comment was merely to support a friend, adding that he hadn’t initially realised Diamonde’s contributions came against Lyon.
“OL fans, it was a mistake. I made this comment just to encourage my friend. I didn’t even realise it was from our match; who would wish for his own team to lose? We work hard each day to win matches and trophies. For OL, I am sorry. Thank you,” he said.
Despite the apology, reports suggest that Lyon is unlikely to dismiss the incident so easily.
According to RMC Sports, the club officials have called Orban in for a formal discussion, with potential penalties, including the loss of his ethics bonus, on the table.
The timing of the whole saga only adds to the striker's struggles this season, as he has now been excluded from the squad due to disciplinary issues.
The forward, who scored twice in Ligue 1 this season, now finds himself battling not only for playing time but to restore his standing at Lyon.
