It was indeed a night to forget for Asisat Oshoala, who found the net once again but couldn’t prevent her team Bay FC from falling to a heavy 5-1 defeat against Gotham FC in the NWSL on Saturday.
The Super Falcons star offered a glimmer of hope, levelling the score in the first half, but Bay FC collapsed under relentless pressure in the second period.
Oshoala’s equaliser came just nine minutes after Gotham FC took the lead through Jenna Nighswonger’s penalty.
However, despite her best efforts, Bay FC struggled to find any real momentum against a determined Gotham side, who regained control shortly after the break.
Oshoala, who has been in impressive form, bagged her seventh goal of the season, continuing a scoring streak that now sees her net four times in her last five games.
The reigning CAF Women’s Player of the Year has also notched back-to-back goals for Bay FC.
Asisat's Bay FC crumble under Gotham’s attack
After Oshoala's first-half equaliser, Gotham FC came out firing in the second half.
U.S. international Rose Lavelle restored their lead before Esther González's quickfire double pushed the home team out of reach.
Cecelia Kizer added the finishing touch with a late goal, sealing Bay FC’s fate.
Despite her offensive and defensive contributions—winning three tackles, three ground duels, two recoveries, and making 15 accurate passes—Oshoala’s efforts were in vain as Bay FC’s defence was picked apart.
With this defeat, Bay FC now sit in eighth place with 28 points from 23 games in the 14-team table.
It also marks their second loss in five matches, a worrying trend as they prepare for their next test against Kansas City Current.
For Asisat, it was a mixed day—another goal for the individual record books but a result that leaves Bay FC’s playoff hopes hanging by a thread.
