Osimhen blast insufficient as sorry Galatasaray exit Europa League with a whimper

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen found the net, but his goal was not enough to secure a victory for Galatasaray, as they settled for a 2-2 draw with AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League play-offs at Rams Park on Thursday.

Heading into the clash, the Turkish champions harboured hopes of staging a remarkable comeback after suffering a 4-1 defeat in the reverse fixture last week. With Osimhen missing the previous fixture due to suspension- back in the lineup, expectations were high for him to spearhead the comeback but that was not to be.

The visitors seized control of the match with a commanding 2-0 lead, courtesy of goals from Seiya Maikuma and Denso Kasius.

Osimhen responded in the 56th minute, finishing off a well-worked move involving Lucas Torreira. Roland Sallai then brought Galatasaray level in the 70th minute, igniting hopes of a late turnaround.

Thursday evening's result confirmed Galatasaray's exit from the competition, as they bowed out with a 6-3 aggregate defeat.

Osimhen shines with a dominant display despite Galatasaray’s exit

Victor Osimhen delivered a standout performance for Galatasaray, showcasing his attacking prowess and physical presence throughout the game.

The Nigerian forward registered four shots on target, with one finding the back of the net, while also attempting two off-target efforts and seeing another blocked.

Beyond his goal, Osimhen was actively involved in the team’s build-up play, recording 25 touches and completing 10 out of 12 passes with an impressive 83% accuracy.

He also created one key chance and attempted a cross as he worked tirelessly to drive his team forward. His aerial dominance was evident, winning four out of six aerial duels, while on the ground, he battled in three duels, winning one.

Despite his influential display, Galatasaray ultimately fell short in their comeback attempt. Osimhen was substituted in the 80th minute, making way for Mohammed Berat Lus, but his impact on the game was undeniable—a true man-of-the-match performance.
