Osimhen: How Diomandé’s record Real Madrid move could push Barcelona towards Super Eagles star

Real Madrid have completed one of the biggest transfers in football history after announcing the signing of 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomandé from RB Leipzig in a deal that could rise to €140 million, Footynaija reports.

Interestingly, Diomandé’s capture instantly raises fresh questions about whether Barcelona now need a striker like Victor Osimhen to keep pace with their fiercest rivals.

Real Madrid fought off interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool to land the young Ivorian forward. The Spanish giants will pay an initial €125 million, with another €15 million tied to bonuses, taking the total package to €140 million. The transfer makes Diomandé the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history, surpassing the fees paid for Jude Bellingham and Eden Hazard, while also becoming the most expensive African footballer ever.

Diomandé has signed a seven-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 30, 2033. His former club, CD Leganés, will also benefit financially through a sell-on clause agreed when he joined RB Leipzig in 2025.

Diomandé arrives in Madrid after an outstanding breakthrough season in Germany. The teenage winger scored 12 Bundesliga goals and supplied eight assists for RB Leipzig during the 2025-26 campaign, earning the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award.

His impressive form continued at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he starred for Ivory Coast and picked up the Player of the Match award against Ecuador, further convincing Real Madrid that he was ready for football’s biggest stage.

New head coach José Mourinho is expected to use the youngster mainly on the right wing. Diomandé’s speed, direct running and ability to beat defenders give Madrid a natural wide attacker to complete an exciting front three alongside Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior.

His arrival is also part of an ambitious summer rebuild. Real Madrid have already strengthened several areas by bringing in Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Espí. Mourinho reportedly wanted two strong options in every position, and the club responded by adding proven quality across defence, midfield and attack.

The rebuild comes with the clear objective to reclaim the La Liga title after Barcelona’s recent success under Hansi Flick. Mourinho’s tactical style, built on defensive organisation and quick counter-attacks, presents a sharp contrast to Flick’s aggressive pressing and high defensive line, setting up another fascinating chapter in Spanish football’s biggest rivalry.

Could Osimhen become Barcelona’s answer?

Real Madrid’s spending spree has increased the pressure on Barcelona, who head into the new season facing major tactical and financial challenges.

The biggest change is the departure of Robert Lewandowski, who left after his contract expired to join Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer. His exit leaves Barcelona without an experienced out-and-out centre-forward.

Sporting director Deco is expected to rely on a more flexible attack built around Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and newly-signed Anthony Gordon. While the trio offers pace and creativity, none is a traditional penalty-box striker capable of consistently finishing crosses and half-chances.

That is why Tottenham-linked Victor Osimhen continues to be linked with the Catalan club. The Galatasaray striker would offer exactly the qualities Barcelona currently lack. His aerial strength, intelligent movement and powerful finishing could provide the focal point needed to convert the team’s possession into more goals.

Osimhen’s pace would also stretch deep defensive lines, something that could be especially valuable against a Mourinho team expected to defend compactly before breaking quickly on the counter. His relentless pressing from the front would also fit naturally into Flick’s high-intensity system.

A transfer, however, remains difficult. Barcelona are still working under La Liga’s strict financial rules, making any big-money signing complicated. Galatasaray are believed to value Osimhen at between €100 million and €150 million, while his reported €15 million annual net salary would add another major obstacle.

Reports have suggested Osimhen could be open to reducing his wages if the opportunity to play in La Liga arises. Even so, Barcelona would still need to solve their financial restrictions before any move could become realistic.
