Has Victor Osimhen been overtaken? Breakdown of Fenerbahçe’s record move for Mason Greenwood

Published on by

Fenerbahçe have completed the biggest transfers in the club’s history after signing English forward Mason Greenwood from French club Olympique Marseille in a deal worth €39 million, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Istanbul giants confirmed the transfer through Turkey’s Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), announcing that the 24-year-old had signed a four-year contract. The club also revealed the financial details behind the agreement, making Greenwood the most expensive signing in Fenerbahçe’s history.

Despite the huge transfer fee, Victor Osimhen remains the most expensive player ever signed by a Turkish club. The Nigerian striker’s €75 million permanent move from Napoli to Galatasaray in July 2025 is still comfortably the biggest transfer in Süper Lig history.

Greenwood’s arrival is another sign that Turkish clubs are now willing to spend record amounts to compete both domestically and in European competitions, with Fenerbahçe hoping the English attacker can help them challenge Galatasaray for the league title and make a deep run in Europe.

Fenerbahçe break club record as Greenwood joins from Marseille

Fenerbahçe had been chasing Greenwood for several weeks before finally reaching an agreement with Marseille.

According to the figures released by the club, the Turkish side will pay €39 million to the Ligue 1 club. The money will be paid in three equal instalments of €13 million over the next three years. Fenerbahçe will also cover the FIFA solidarity contribution linked to the transfer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Greenwood will earn around €10 million net per season during his time in Turkey.

Reports from The Athletic also explained how the transfer money will be shared. Marseille will receive €24 million, while Greenwood’s former club Manchester United are set to collect €12.8 million because of the sell-on clause included when they sold him in 2024. Spanish club Getafe will receive around €3.2 million.

The move breaks Fenerbahçe’s previous transfer record of €28 million, which had been paid for midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

Greenwood also becomes the second most expensive signing in Turkish football history, sitting behind only Osimhen’s record-breaking move to Galatasaray.

The English attacker enjoyed an outstanding spell at Marseille after joining from Manchester United in July 2024 for €26 million. During the 2025/26 season, he scored 26 goals in all competitions, including 16 league goals, finishing second in the Ligue 1 scoring chart.

Across his two seasons with Marseille, Greenwood made 76 appearances, scoring 48 goals.

Why Osimhen still holds Turkish football’s biggest transfer record

Although Greenwood’s transfer has rewritten Fenerbahçe’s history books, it has not replaced Victor Osimhen as Turkish football’s biggest-ever signing.

Galatasaray made history in July 2025 when they signed the Nigerian striker permanently from Napoli after activating the release clause in his contract following an unforgettable loan spell.

The agreement was spread over two payments, with €40 million paid immediately and the remaining €35 million scheduled before the end of the 2025/26 season. Napoli also secured a 10 percent sell-on clause on any future profit from Osimhen’s sale.

Osimhen also agreed to a four-year contract running until June 2029, with a reported annual package worth €21 million. That includes a €15 million net salary, a €1 million loyalty bonus, and €5 million in image rights.

Galatasaray’s decision to invest heavily in the Super Eagles striker came after his incredible loan campaign during the 2024/25 season, when he scored 37 goals in 41 matches and helped the club win both the Süper Lig title and the Turkish Cup. He carried that form into the following season with more goals in both domestic and European competitions.

Greenwood’s arrival has, however, changed the list of the biggest transfers in Turkish football. Osimhen remains number one while Greenwood’s switch to Fenerbahçe places him second. Wilfred Singo follows with €30.7 million, ahead of Orkun Kökçü at €30 million, while Guendouzi’s €28 million transfer now rounds out the top five.
