Why Super Eagles striker Onyekuru is leaving Genclerbirligi after 11 months

Super Eagles forward Henry Onyekuru has reached an agreement to terminate his contract with Turkish Süper Lig side Genclerbirligi, Afrik-Foot reports.

This separation brings a quiet end to a tumultuous partnership. The 29-year-old joined the club on a free transfer amid significant fanfare.

Due to his previous success with Galatasaray, expectations were high that he would provide a much-needed spark upon the club’s return to the Turkish top-flight.

However, the move proved to be a major disappointment. Onyekuru failed to register a goal or an assist in 19 appearances.

As the season progressed, reports emerged regarding unpaid wages, leading to reports that the forward had refused to play.

The situation was escalated by several Turkish journalists who questioned his professionalism, labeling him a lazy player. Ultimately, the Nigerian international was sidelined for the final eight games of the campaign.

With one year remaining on his deal, it had become clear that a departure was inevitable. According to Haber Ankara Spor, Genclerbirligi officials met with Onyekuru’s representatives on Tuesday to finalize the terms of his release.

He is set to receive a total settlement of €940,000—covering the €240,000 owed from last season and an additional €700,000 as compensation for the upcoming campaign.

Henry Onyekuru: What’s Next for the Struggling Super Eagles Star?

When Henry Onyekuru burst onto the scene with Eupen in 2015, he was widely regarded as the next big thing in African football, consistently delivering goals and impactful assists.

Unfortunately, he has struggled to fulfill that early promise. His 2019 move to Everton represents a career peak that ultimately failed to yield the expected results.

Now a free agent, his future remains uncertain. His dismal stint at Genclerbirligi has significantly dented his reputation, making it unlikely he will attract interest from other top Turkish clubs.

As a result, he may be forced to look toward the Turkish second tier or opportunities in smaller European leagues.

Although there have been rumors linking him to a move to the Saudi Pro League, no concrete offers have materialized. For his agents, the challenge of revitalizing his career following this difficult period will be significant.
