Osimhen vs Lukaku: Key numbers behind the Süper Lig’s new blockbuster battle

Published on by

The Turkish Süper Lig has a new striker rivalry. Victor Osimhen leads the attack for Galatasaray. Romelu Lukaku now leads Fenerbahçe’s attack after his move from Napoli. Both strikers have a recent connection with Napoli, but their paths have now taken them to Istanbul’s two biggest clubs, Afrik-Foot reports.

Their first league meeting of the new season is scheduled for 25 October at Galatasaray’s home ground. That match could become the first major chapter in a rivalry built around two very different No. 9s.

The numbers give a useful starting point. Osimhen enters the campaign after a full 2025-26 season in Turkey. Lukaku arrives after a disrupted final season at Napoli, so his latest figures need more care.

Osimhen has the stronger recent scoring numbers

Osimhen’s 2025-26 Süper Lig numbers give him the clearest advantage. The Nigeria striker scored 15 goals and made five assists in 22 league appearances for Galatasaray. He also produced 96 shots, with 40 on target. His 96 shots were the second-highest total in the data for the campaign and showed how often he looked to finish attacks himself. That works out at more than four shots per league appearance.

His scoring rate was also strong. Osimhen scored once every six shots, while 40 of his 96 attempts were on target. That is a 41.67% shooting accuracy.

Lukaku’s latest Napoli numbers tell a very different story. The Belgian made only five Serie A appearances in 2025-26, playing just 44 minutes. He scored one goal and made no assists. He had only two shots, with one on target. Those numbers should not be read as a normal season for Lukaku. He simply did not play enough minutes to build a useful statistical sample.

His Champions League involvement was also very small. Lukaku made only one appearance and played nine minutes in the competition for Napoli. He did not score or assist.

That makes a direct 2025-26 comparison difficult. Osimhen had a full campaign in which he was a regular starter. Lukaku’s season was disrupted by injury and limited availability. Reports at the time said he had made his season debut after a serious muscle injury.

Lukaku’s 2024-25 season is therefore still useful as his last full-season benchmark. He scored 14 Serie A goals and supplied 10 assists in 36 appearances, playing 2,843 minutes. He also had 64 shots and 24 shots on target.

The contrast is clear. Osimhen brings recent scoring volume. Lukaku brings a proven record of goals plus assists, but his latest season gives us too little playing time to judge his current level from raw totals alone.

Shots and aerial battles show two different No. 9s

The shot numbers point to a major difference in how the two forwards attack. Osimhen’s 96 league shots in 2025-26 show a striker who constantly looks for the final action. His 40 shots on target also show that many of those attempts tested the goalkeeper.

Lukaku’s two Serie A shots last season tell us almost nothing about his normal shooting output because he played only 44 minutes. His previous full Napoli season gives a better guide. He had 64 shots and 24 shots on target in 2024-25, while his 10 assists showed that his role went beyond finishing chances.

That difference could shape the Fenerbahçe-Galatasaray battle. Osimhen is at his most dangerous when he can attack space and get into shooting positions. Lukaku can play with his back to goal, use his strength against defenders and bring other attackers into the game.

Aerial duels add another layer. Lukaku’s size makes him a natural target for crosses and long passes. Yet his 2024-25 Serie A data also showed that being tall does not mean winning every ball in the air. He won 42 aerial duels and lost 56 in that campaign.

Osimhen is shorter than Lukaku, but his jumping ability and movement make him a serious aerial threat. He can attack crosses from a moving position rather than simply waiting for the ball.

That could matter in the Istanbul derby. If Fenerbahçe use Lukaku as a target man, Galatasaray’s defenders will have to deal with his strength. If Galatasaray find Osimhen early, Fenerbahçe could face a different problem and that’s his ability to run behind the defence.

The battle is therefore not only about who scores more goals. It is also about how each striker creates problems before the shot arrives.

Champions League numbers give Lukaku experience, but Osimhen has the recent edge

Lukaku has the larger Champions League career record. He has made 42 Champions League appearances and scored 18 goals, with four assists. Osimhen has played 27 Champions League matches and scored 16 goals, with two assists. The raw totals favour Lukaku because he has played 15 more matches.

The scoring rate, though, favours the Super Eagles star. Osimhen’s 16 goals in 27 appearances give him about 0.59 goals per game. Lukaku’s 18 goals in 42 appearances give him about 0.43.

Osimhen also had the stronger recent Champions League campaign. He scored seven goals for Galatasaray in the 2025-26 competition, while Lukaku played only nine minutes for Napoli and did not score. That gives Osimhen the recent European edge. Lukaku still has the advantage in experience because of his longer Champions League career.

The difference matters because both clubs have European ambitions. Galatasaray finished the 2025-26 Süper Lig season as champions with 77 points, seven points ahead of Fenerbahçe. The new season therefore gives Lukaku a clear target to help Fenerbahçe close that gap.

Osimhen has already shown what he can do in Turkey. His league output, shot volume and Champions League goals give Galatasaray a proven attacking weapon. Lukaku’s challenge is different. He must turn his experience and physical strength into regular production again after a disrupted final season in Italy.

That makes the October derby especially interesting. Osimhen has the stronger recent numbers. Lukaku has the longer body of work. Osimhen has the higher recent Champions League scoring rate. Lukaku has more European experience and a proven record as both a scorer and creator.

The first Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe meeting on 25 October will offer the clearest test yet of which profile works better in Turkey. Until then, the numbers suggest that Osimhen starts with the momentum, while Lukaku has the chance to change the argument himself.
