Victor Osimhen’s next mission: 3 Nigerian Champions League records within reach

Victor Osimhen has already rewritten several chapters of Nigerian football history, but the UEFA Champions League still offers him fresh opportunities to build an even greater legacy, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 27-year-old striker has enjoyed the best period of his club career since joining Galatasaray from Napoli. He quickly became the biggest star in Turkish football, leading the Istanbul club to back-to-back Süper Lig titles while producing remarkable numbers in front of goal.

Across all competitions, Osimhen has scored 59 goals and provided 15 assists in just 74 appearances for Galatasaray. His first season ended with a league and Turkish Cup double as he scored 37 goals in 41 matches, breaking Mario Jardel’s long-standing record for the most goals by a foreign player in a single Galatasaray season.

He followed that with another outstanding campaign in 2025-26. Alongside helping Galatasaray retain the league title, Osimhen shone in Europe by scoring seven goals in 10 Champions League matches, including a memorable hat-trick away to Ajax before the Turkish champions were knocked out in the Round of 16.

That European run also helped him become Nigeria’s all-time leading Champions League goalscorer with 16 goals, surpassing every Nigerian player to feature in the competition. However, with another Champions League campaign about to begin, the Super Eagles striker has several more historic milestones within reach.

Osimhen chasing Nwankwo Kanu’s appearance record

Scoring goals has never been Osimhen’s biggest problem. The next challenge is staying on Europe’s biggest stage long enough to climb Nigeria’s all-time appearance rankings.

Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu remains Nigeria’s most-capped player in Champions League history with 60 appearances after representing Ajax and Arsenal.

Behind him is John Obi Mikel, who played 59 matches during his successful years at Chelsea, while Obafemi Martins sits third with 34 appearances.

Osimhen currently has 27 Champions League appearances from spells with Lille, Napoli and Galatasaray. The expanded league-phase format guarantees every club at least eight matches before the knockout rounds, giving him more opportunities than ever before.

If Galatasaray reach the knockout stages again, Osimhen could comfortably move beyond Martins this season and close the gap on Mikel and Kanu. Considering he is still in his prime, the Nigerian striker has every chance of eventually becoming his country’s most-capped player in the competition.

Joining Nigeria’s Champions League winners

Winning the Champions League remains the biggest dream for every European footballer, and only three Nigerians have achieved it.

Finidi George and Nwankwo Kanu lifted the famous trophy together with Ajax in 1995 after defeating AC Milan in Vienna. Seventeen years later, John Obi Mikel became the third Nigerian winner when Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich on penalties in the unforgettable 2012 final in Munich.

Osimhen has already established himself as one of Africa’s deadliest strikers, but adding the Champions League trophy would place him in one of Nigerian football’s most exclusive groups.

Galatasaray may not be considered favourites alongside Europe’s traditional giants, but their recent progress, combined with Osimhen’s outstanding scoring form, gives the Turkish champions hope of challenging deeper into the competition. If they can produce a surprise run to the title, Osimhen would become only the fourth Nigerian to lift European football’s biggest club trophy.

Osimhen: Breaking his own goals record again

One record already belongs to Osimhen, but he has the chance to push it even further.

His seven Champions League goals during the 2025-26 season are the highest ever scored by a Nigerian in a single campaign. The tally came through several outstanding performances, including stunning winning strikes against Liverpool and Juventus.

Now, the challenge is to become the first Nigerian player to score at least 10 goals in one Champions League season. The new competition format offers more matches than previous editions, giving top forwards extra opportunities to increase their goal totals. If Galatasaray progress beyond the league phase and Osimhen maintains his current scoring rate, reaching double figures is a realistic target.

Achieving that milestone would not only extend his own Nigerian record but also allow him to challenge the African single-season benchmark of 10 Champions League goals jointly held by Samuel Eto’o and Mohamed Salah.

With his confidence high and his place as Galatasaray’s main attacking weapon firmly established, Osimhen enters the 2026-27 Champions League campaign with another chance to make Nigerian football history.
