Osimhen, Okocha miss out as Moffi makes Nigeria’s top 5 Ligue 1 goalscorers chart

Jay-Jay Okocha, Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams have graced the French Ligue 1 with lasting memories, but none spent long enough in the division to challenge Nigeria’s greatest goalscoring records, Afrik-Foot reports.

Instead, it is Terem Moffi who has crept up his way into the country’s top five all-time scorers in France, overtaking bigger names and putting him within touching distance of two Nigerian legends.

While Victor Osimhen arrived in Ligue 1 as one of Europe’s brightest young strikers before earning a blockbuster move to Napoli, and Okocha dazzled Paris Saint-Germain supporters with his skill and creativity, neither accumulated the volume of goals required to climb the all-time rankings.

Longevity makes the difference

As per Statmuse, the statistics underline the importance of longevity in France over the prolificity of the players in this list.

Former Super Eagles striker John Utaka remains Nigeria’s all-time leading scorer in Ligue 1 with 59 goals in 239 appearances, a record built over several productive seasons with Lens, Rennes and Montpellier.

Just behind him is 1997 African Footballer of the Year Victor Ikpeba, whose 55 goals in 170 matches for AS Monaco established him as one of Nigeria’s finest exports to French football.

Both players spent the majority of their club careers in France, giving them the edge.

Moffi’s consistency earns recognition

Terem Moffi now occupies third place after scoring 54 Ligue 1 goals in 148 appearances, placing him just one goal behind Ikpeba and five behind Utaka.

His breakthrough at Lorient before moving to Nice turned him into one of the league’s most reliable finishers, averaging 0.36 goals per game while also contributing 11 assists.

What’s more impressive is Moffi reached that tally despite missing significant football through injury in recent seasons.

Had he remained fully fit, he could have become Nigeria’s highest-scoring player in Ligue 1 history.

Fourth on the list is Super Eagles captain Moses Simon, who has scored 36 goals in 206 Ligue 1 matches.

Although his goal return is considerably lower than Moffi’s, Simon’s influence extends beyond finishing chances.

His 40 assists underline his productivity, making him Nigeria’s best creator ever in the French top-flight. Second on that list is Terem Moffi with 11, a mile away from the numbers achieved by the former FC Nantes winger.

Former Lille striker Peter Odemwingie completes the top five with 23 goals in just 75 appearances, highlighting an impressive scoring return during his relatively short stay in France.

Why Osimhen and Okocha rank lower

Victor Osimhen’s ninth-place ranking appears surprising considering his reputation as one of Africa’s greatest strikers. However, the explanation lies in opportunity rather than quality.

The Galatasaray forward scored 13 goals in only 27 Ligue 1 appearances for Lille before securing his move to Napoli, giving him the best goals-per-game ratio among Nigeria’s leading scorers at 0.48 per match.

His efficiency suggests he could have challenged Utaka’s record had he remained in France longer, but he was in Lille for just one season before sealing his big-money move to Napoli.

Jay-Jay Okocha’s case is even more unique. The PSG icon managed 12 league goals in 84 appearances, but his legacy in France was never defined by goals.

Instead, Okocha was one of the best entertainers, using his flair, dribbling and creativity to transform matches rather than dominate scoring charts.
