Real reason Victor Osimhen is ready to take pay cut for Atletico Madrid despite Galatasaray contract

Victor Osimhen’s dream of playing under Diego Simeone has come to light after reports claimed the Super Eagles striker was offered to Atletico Madrid this summer, Afrik-Foot reports.

According to Club Uria, intermediaries presented the 27-year-old Galatasaray striker to the Spanish giants in a deal worth around €75 million. However, despite Osimhen’s reputation as one of Europe’s top forwards, Atletico decided against pursuing the transfer.

The main reason was financial. Atletico do not have enough room in their budget to complete such an expensive deal this summer. The club have also made it clear that Julian Alvarez is their first-choice central striker and remains a key part of Simeone’s plans.

Club officials have no intention of selling the Real Madrid and Barcelona-linked Argentina international, leaving little need to bring in another high-profile striker. That decision effectively closed the door on Osimhen’s possible move to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Barcelona, Arsenal and Tottenham have also been approached about the Nigerian international during the transfer window. Tottenham have reportedly gone a step further by submitting an offer worth more than €55 million, although that bid remains below Galatasaray’s valuation.

Osimhen ready to earn less because of Simeone admiration

One notable detail in the failed transfer is Osimhen’s willingness to reduce his salary just to join Atletico Madrid.

The Nigerian striker currently earns a lucrative wage at Galatasaray, with Turkey’s tax benefits for foreign footballers helping increase his take-home income. Even so, Osimhen was reportedly prepared to accept lower wages because of his desire to work under Simeone.

His admiration for the Atletico manager is nothing new. After facing Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League in January, Osimhen openly praised both Simeone and his team.

“I like him, I have always been a fan of their coach. I’ve met him a couple of times. They play aggressively and have an identity.

“The coach has been there for many years, so the players are used to his style of play. That’s why I praise the performance we put in; Atlético is one of the best teams in the world, and getting a result like a draw against them shows you’re on the right track.”

Those comments now help explain why Osimhen, who is open to leaving Galatasaray, was ready to sacrifice part of his salary. Working under one of football’s longest-serving and most respected coaches was a challenge he was eager to accept.

Despite that commitment, Atletico remain firm in their decision. With financial limitations and complete confidence in Alvarez leading the attack, the La Liga club have ended any hopes of signing Osimhen this summer. The Nigerian remains under contract with Galatasaray until 2029, while his representatives continue exploring other options across Europe.
