Victor Osimhen rejects Galatasaray captaincy: 3 big reasons behind his decision

Victor Osimhen has reportedly turned down the chance to become Galatasaray’s permanent captain ahead of the 2026/27 season, Afrik-Foot reports.

According to respected Turkish journalist Savaş Çorlu, speaking on A Spor, the Nigerian striker declined the opportunity to wear the captain’s armband on a full-time basis despite being one of the club’s biggest stars. The decision comes only weeks after reports suggested that Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek, the club’s board and head coach Okan Buruk wanted Osimhen to replace Mauro Icardi as the team’s permanent captain following the Argentine’s departure.

The development has surprised many supporters because accepting the role would have been another major milestone in Osimhen’s career. It could also have made him the first African to captain the Turkish giants on a permanent basis.
