Real Madrid have wasted little time rebuilding after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that ended without a major trophy, Afrik-Foot reports.
Following his return to the Santiago Bernabéu, José Mourinho has already overseen significant changes to the squad, while club president Florentino Pérez has backed the project with major additions.
The Spanish giants have strengthened several key positions. Marc Cucurella arrived from Chelsea for €55 million to solve long-standing concerns at left-back after inconsistent seasons from Ferland Mendy and Fran García. Bernardo Silva joined on a free transfer from Manchester City, bringing experience, creativity and leadership to a midfield still adjusting to life after Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos.
The biggest defensive addition came on Thursday, when French international Ibrahima Konaté completed his move from Liverpool. The centre-back is expected to compete directly with Antonio Rüdiger and Éder Militão as Mourinho seeks to tighten a defence that struggled at crucial moments last season.

Real Madrid are also pushing for more arrivals. Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries is reportedly close to joining as Dani Carvajal’s successor, while Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández remains a player admired by the new manager. The club is also expected to bring back academy graduate Nico Paz after his impressive season with Como in Serie A.
Yet despite all the activity, many believe Madrid’s rebuild still lacks one vital ingredient, a world-class centre-forward. That is where Victor Osimhen enters the conversation.
Why Osimhen could complete Mourinho’s new project
The Nigerian striker has enjoyed another prolific campaign with Galatasaray, impressing in the Super Lig and the Champions League where he smashed seven goals. Reports linking him with Real Madrid have grown stronger, with Mourinho said to be a major admirer of the former Napoli star.
One of Madrid’s biggest tactical issues last season was the positioning of Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior. Both players are at their most dangerous attacking from the left side, yet the absence of a traditional striker often forced Mbappé into a central role.
Osimhen’s arrival would immediately solve that problem. His presence as a natural number nine would allow Mbappé and Vinícius to operate in their preferred spaces while creating a more balanced attacking structure.

The 27-year-old also appears tailor-made for Mourinho’s methods. Throughout his career, the Portuguese coach has enjoyed success with powerful, aggressive strikers such as Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o. Osimhen’s relentless pressing, aerial strength, physicality and willingness to battle defenders fit perfectly into that profile. Combined with the energy of new signing Cucurella, Madrid would become far more intense without the ball.
Another attraction is Osimhen’s chemistry potential with Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese playmaker excels at spotting runs behind defensive lines and creating chances in tight spaces. Osimhen’s movement, pace and finishing could make him the ideal target for Silva’s creativity, giving Madrid another attacking dimension.
Perhaps most importantly, Osimhen would offer something the current squad lacks: a dominant aerial threat. Against deep-lying defences, Madrid often struggled to find alternative routes to goal. Osimhen’s heading ability and physical presence inside the penalty area would provide a valuable Plan B when intricate passing moves fail to break opponents down.

The Barcelona challenge and why Real Madrid need more goals
The urgency behind Madrid’s rebuild became clear in the final La Liga standings. Barcelona retained the title with 94 points, eight ahead of Real Madrid’s 86. The Catalan club won 31 matches, scored 95 goals and secured the championship with three games remaining after a decisive 2-0 victory over Madrid in El Clásico on May 10.
While Madrid finished with 77 league goals, Barcelona managed 18 more, a pointer to the significant difference in attacking output between the two teams. Mourinho’s defensive reinforcements may help reduce the gap, but adding a proven goalscorer could be the quickest way to challenge for the title again.
If Dumfries, Enzo Fernández and Nico Paz strengthen the squad’s depth, Osimhen could be the signing that transforms the team’s identity. Madrid have addressed the defence, improved the midfield and added experience across the pitch.
The remaining question is whether they will now invest in the striker capable of bringing everything together. Mourinho’s rebuilt Real Madrid already looks formidable. With Victor Osimhen leading the line, it could become complete.
