Calvin Bassey will not be joining Real Madrid this summer as the Spanish giants have strengthened their defence with the signing of France international Ibrahima Konate, Afrik-Foot reports.
Konate arrives at the Santiago Bernabeu on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract with Liverpool.
The 27-year-old has signed a four-year deal that will keep him at the former La Liga winners until June 2030. Reports indicate that Konate will earn around €22 million gross per season and will be officially unveiled after completing his duties with France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The move is another major statement from Real Madrid under new manager Jose Mourinho, who is rebuilding the squad following two seasons without a major trophy. Konate joins Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella among the club’s headline arrivals this summer.

With David Alaba and Dani Carvajal leaving at the end of their contracts, Madrid wanted an experienced defender capable of making an immediate impact. Konate’s five-year spell at Liverpool, where he made 183 appearances and won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cups, made him one of the most attractive options on the market.
Calvin Bassey: Why Konate was the preferred choice
While Calvin Bassey enjoyed another solid campaign with Fulham and continues to grow into Nigeria’s most reliable defender, several factors worked in Konate’s favour.
The biggest advantage was financial. Real Madrid secured a player in his prime without paying a transfer fee. In contrast, Fulham would likely have demanded between €35 million and €40 million to part with Bassey, who remains under contract in England and is wanted in Turkey.
Experience also played a significant role. Konate has regularly featured in Champions League knockout matches, major cup finals and international tournaments with France. His pedigree at the highest level is greater than Bassey’s, whose Premier League performances have been impressive but largely with teams outside the European elite.

Mourinho’s defensive preferences may have also influenced the decision. The Portuguese coach has traditionally favoured physically imposing centre-backs who dominate aerial duels and defend their penalty area aggressively. Konate fits that profile perfectly, as do Bassey to a certain degree, but the Frenchman is regarded as one of Europe’s strongest aerial defenders.
However, Bassey offers qualities Konate does not. The Super Eagles defender is naturally left-footed, can operate comfortably at centre-back or left-back, and provides tactical flexibility that would have given Madrid additional options across the back line.
Ultimately, Real Madrid’s decision came down to value, experience and readiness. Bassey remains one of Nigeria’s standout defenders and could still attract interest from Europe’s biggest clubs, but Konate’s elite-level track record, aerial dominance and zero-cost transfer made him the more attractive option for Mourinho and Real Madrid this summer.
