However, he made amends in style, scoring twice in the first half to sink José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce and book Gala’s place in the next round.

The Nigerian wasted no time in making his mark, breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute with a clinical right-footed finish after a blistering Galatasaray counterattack.

Osimhen the difference against Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce responded with pressure in search of an equaliser, but it was the league leaders who struck again.

In the 27th minute, Galatasaray were awarded a penalty, and Osimhen hit a low shot that Fenerbahce goalkeeper Yusuf Akçiçek got a hand to but could not keep out to hand his team a two goal lead.

Sebastian Szymański gave Fenerbahce a lifeline just before half-time, pulling a goal back to make it 2-1 and setting up a tense second half.

The game ended on a feisty note as two Galatasaray players – Keren Demirbay and Barış Alper Yılmaz alongside Mert Hakan Yandas of Fenerbahce were sent off in the closing stages of the game.

Despite Fenerbahce’s efforts to find an equaliser, Galatasaray held firm, frustrating Mourinho’s men and seeing out a hard-fought victory.
