Otele: Super Eagles hopeful scores, but Basel fall to Servette defeat

Published on by

Nigerian forward Philip Otele found the back of the net for FC Basel, but his effort was not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat to Servette at the Stade de Genève on Sunday.

After a barren first half, the hosts took the lead through Alexis Antunes in the 50th minute before Dereck Kutesa doubled their lead 11 minutes later.

Otele reignited Basel’s hopes in the 73rd minute with a well-taken finish off a precise assist from Leo Leroy, but it proved insufficient as Servette held firm to claim all three points on home soil.

The 25-year-old's strike was his second goal in four appearances for the Swiss giants since joining on loan from Al Wahda, averaging 54 minutes per game.

Despite the defeat, Basel remain atop the table, maintaining a narrow one-point lead over second-placed Lugano.

Otele shines despite Basel's defeat with impressive attacking display

Despite Basel's disappointing loss, Philip Otele showcased his attacking prowess with a lively performance.

The Nigerian forward registered four shots on target, with one finding the back of the net, and completed two successful dribbles out of three attempts.

However, he also missed two big chances that could have changed the game’s outcome. Otele was heavily involved in Basel’s play, recording 42 touches and delivering 14 accurate passes from 23 attempts, representing a 61% accuracy rate.
