Trabzonspor handed major boost as Onuachu returns after one-month injury

Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu has made a return from a one-and-a-half month injury.

Due to the injury, the Trabzonspor player sat out the entire month of March on the sidelines but is now expected to return to the field as his side take on Sivasspor this weekend.

Onuachu was injured in the quarter-finals of the Turkish Cup match against Istanbul Başakşehir on February 28, suffering a non-disintegrated fracture in his left arm.

Following a successful surgery, the player has recovered well and has taken part in training with the rest of his teammates.

Paul Onuachu's Turkish Cup injury

Trabzonspor secured a 1-0 win from a lone strike in the 57th minute by Edin Visca to advance to the semi-finals.

However, the 2.01 m (6 ft 7 in) towering Super Eagles striker was subbed off in the 68th minute of that encounter as he succumbed to his injury and was replaced by Enis Destan.

Since then, Paul Onuachu missed four league games for his club against Alanyaspor, Fenerbahçe, Fatih Karagümrük and Konyaspor, but has recently started training with the team.

According to reports, the €12.4 million rated player is in good physical condition and is likely to return to the bench as Trabzonspor host Sivasspor at the Akyazi Stadium on Friday.

Onuachu has scored nine goals and provided three assists in 17 matches for Trabzonspor this season.

With the title out of the club's reach, the Nigerian will be eager to help the team secure a third-place finish which will guarantee them a UEFA Europa League spot at the end of the season.

At the time of this publication, Trabzonspor are third on the league table after 31 matches played. They've obtained 52 points and are five points ahead of Besiktas who hold fourth position.

Paul Onuachu can help the Super Eagles in next World Cup qualifiers

The next international break will see the Super Eagles of Nigeria back in action as they bid to correct their slow start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria will take on South Africa at home on June 3, before crossing the border to square off against neighbours Benin Republic four days later.

The Super Eagles are placed third in Group C of the qualifying series after consecutive draws against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in their first two games.

However, with several Nigerian players like Paul Onuachu, Victor Osimhen, Cyriel Dessers, Victor Boniface, and Ademola Lookman all in good form this season, it'll be surprising to see the three-time AFCON winners fail to top the standings when it's all said and done.

Unfortunately, Onuachu doesn't get as much playing time as he would like with the Super Eagles. But if he's called upon and given a chance to play, the former Midtjylland striker can be a difference maker.

Since his debut in 2019 for Nigeria, he has made 22 appearances and scored three goals donning the green-white-green of the Super Eagles.
