Why Paul Onuachu turned down Al-Hilal to stay at Trabzonspor

Paul Onuachu has ended speculation over his future by committing himself to Trabzonspor despite receiving lucrative interest from Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Super Eagles striker has made it clear that money was not the deciding factor behind his latest career decision.

Speaking to Turkish outlet Gazete61, Onuachu admitted that his relationship with Trabzonspor extends far beyond football.

“It was not a coincidence to play in Trabzonspor, it was part of fate,” the 32-year-old said.

“There have been teams that want me from Turkey and make very serious offers, but there are many different emotions that Trabzon gives.

“When I left Southampton, I said, ‘Trabzon, nothing.’ I’ve made a separate connection with the people here.”

His comments appear to have ended months of speculation linking him with Saudi Arabia and the Premier League.

Fulham had been credited with strong interest in the 32-year-old earlier this summer, but those rumours have cooled significantly after reports from COPE confirmed the Cottagers had reached an agreement with Real Madrid to sign Gonzalo García in a deal worth around €70 million.

With Fulham now focusing elsewhere, Onuachu’s decision to remain in Turkey appears justified.

1. An emotional connection stronger than financial incentives

Saudi Arabian clubs have consistently attracted Europe’s biggest names with enormous financial packages, yet Onuachu chose familiarity over fortune.

His own words reveal that Trabzonspor has become more than just another club.

Since arriving permanently from Southampton, he has become one of Trabzonspor’s biggest fan favourites, with supporters embracing both his personality and goalscoring exploits.

That emotional attachment is difficult to replace, regardless of salary. For a player entering the latter stages of his career, stability and happiness can often outweigh another lucrative contract abroad.

2. Trabzonspor made him the poster boy of their project

The Turkish club never treated Onuachu as a short-term solution. Instead, they invested heavily to bring him back permanently and immediately built their attack around his strengths.

Last season, the Nigerian repaid that faith by finishing among the Süper Lig’s most productive forwards while helping Trabzonspor qualify for European competition.

The club’s leadership have also made it clear they want continuity rather than another rebuilding phase.

Vice President Zeyyat Kafkas recently highlighted the importance of strengthening the relationship between the club and its supporters.

That philosophy extends onto the pitch. Keeping Onuachu sends a strong message that Trabzonspor intend to remain competitive both domestically and in Europe.

3. Ambition still outweighs financial reward

At 32, many players choose Saudi Arabia for one final lucrative contract. Onuachu appears to have chosen something different.

Remaining in European football allows him to continue competing at a higher competitive level while preserving his place in Eric Chelle’s plans ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Regular European football also gives him another opportunity to lead Trabzonspor in continental competition, something an immediate move to Saudi Arabia would have ended.

For a striker who rebuilt his reputation after leaving Southampton, staying where he feels valued is a good decision.

Fulham’s exit strengthened Trabzonspor’s position

Earlier this week, Fulham were still being linked with the Nigerian striker, but the landscape has changed quickly.

The Cottagers have agreed a deal to sign Real Madrid striker Gonzalo García, effectively ending their pursuit of another centre-forward.

That development removes one of the few realistic Premier League destinations for Onuachu this summer.

With Fulham out of the picture and Trabzonspor determined to keep their leading striker, the Nigerian now appears set to remain at the centre of the Turkish club’s ambitions for at least another season.

Rather than chasing the biggest financial offer available, Paul Onuachu has chosen ambition and a city he openly describes as home.
