Two reasons Philip Otele’s Lazio transfer failed

Super Eagles winger Philip Otele was strongly linked with a transfer to Italian Serie A club Lazio on transfer deadline day, Afrik-Foot reports.

​Otele’s future has been a major issue at Basel this summer, as although he is an important player, they are willing to sell him. Due to his quality, he has been linked with clubs like Al Jazira, Birmingham City, and Lecce. But those deals did not work out.

​However, when the Lazio links emerged on Tuesday, it looked like the deal would happen. The Biancocelesti need quality players in the final third due to their attacking struggles last season, which saw them score just 40 goals in 38 games.

​The report indicated that Lazio were looking to sign Otele on loan for this season. At first, Basel were open to the deal, but it ultimately fell through. Here are the two reasons the Otele transfer collapsed.

​Why Philip Otele’s Lazio Transfer Failed

​When news of Philip Otele’s links to Lazio emerged, it was supposed to be a loan transfer.

​Lazio do not have the financial strength of some of their Serie A counterparts like Juventus, Napoli, or Como, so they are very careful with how they spend money.

​Moreover, since Otele is unproven in a top-five European league, a loan was a logical choice.

​However, according to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, the Biancocelesti have hit their loan limit. Clubs are allowed to have only six players over 21 years old on loan at a time, and Lazio appear to have reached that quota.

​They tried to buy him outright, but the parties involved could not finalize the deal before the transfer window in Italy closed at 8:00 PM.

Deal off as Basel have now used all their loan spots.

​Perhaps if they had started negotiations sooner, they would have been able to close the deal in time.

​What Next for Otele?

​With the Lazio transfer now off the table, Otele has a big decision to make. He obviously cannot move to England, Spain, Germany, Italy, or France, since their transfer windows are already closed.

​However, several other leagues remain open. The Turkish Süper Lig is still an option, while clubs in the Middle East are also viable destinations.

​If he does not leave, Basel are under no pressure to force a move. Otele is still under contract for the next two years, so he can simply choose to stay in Switzerland.

​The next two weeks will definitely be critical for his career.
