Philip Otele: Why €4m stands between Super Eagles star and Saudi Arabia move

Super Eagles winger Philip Otele is expected to leave Swiss club Basel this summer, but there is just one hurdle standing in the way, Afrik-Foot reports.

​The 26-year-old attacker spent last season on loan at Hamburger SV, where he featured in nine games, registering one goal and one assist.

Although the German club had the option to sign him permanently, they opted to send him back to Basel at the end of the campaign.

​Ever since his return to Switzerland, his future has been the subject of heavy speculation. He has been linked with newly promoted Italian side Lecce and Frosinone, and even attracted interest from English Championship club Birmingham City. However, nothing materialized from those talks.

​Now, it appears Saudi Arabia might be his most likely next destination.

​Saudi Pro League club Al Fateh have shown strong interest in securing his services, but a key valuation gap threatens to stall the transfer.

​Will Philip Otele Move to Saudi Arabia?

​According to transfer specialist Ben Jacobs, Saudi top-flight club Al Fateh have made a concrete move for Philip Otele.

​The Pro League outfit has already agreed on personal terms with the Super Eagles attacker. However, the only obstacle holding up the transfer is the transfer fee.

​Basel value Otele at €4 million, but Al Fateh’s opening bid of €3 million was swiftly rejected by the Swiss club.

​Basel have no intention of lowering their asking price for the Nigerian forward, meaning Al Fateh will have to meet the valuation if they want to land their man.

​The Swiss club hold all the leverage here, as they are in no rush to sell a player who still has two years left on his contract and is not actively forcing an exit.

​It is hardly a surprise that Otele is open to a move to Saudi Arabia. He has played in the Middle East before with UAE club Al Wahda, making the region a familiar environment for him.

​Additionally, the lucrative wages on offer are naturally a strong temptation for most players.

​It now remains to be seen whether Al Fateh will return with an improved bid for the Super Eagles star, with the Saudi Arabian transfer window remaining open until September 6.
