Philip Otele transfer: Two reasons Derby County are prepared to battle Lecce for Nigerian winger

Derby County have entered the race to sign Super Eagles winger Philip Otele, with the Championship side competing against Serie A outfit Lecce for the FC Basel attacker, Afrik-Foot reports.

According to The72, Derby have already held talks with the Nigerian international, who is expected to leave Swiss club Basel this summer for a fee in the region of €5 million.

The Rams are not alone in the race. Lecce have opened formal discussions with Basel, while Frosinone and clubs from Saudi Arabia are also monitoring the situation.

However, Derby’s growing interest suggests they believe Otele could become one of the key additions to John Eustace’s squad ahead of another promotion push.

For a Derby side looking to convert territorial dominance into more decisive attacking moments, Otele’s ability to carry the ball over long distances could provide an entirely different dimension.

At 27, Otele combines valuable experience with years still ahead of him at a high level.

His career has taken him through Lithuania, Romania, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland and Germany, exposing him to different tactical systems and styles of football.
