The Super Eagles have finally run out of lifelines. Two matches remain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series, yet the road has narrowed to a single lane: win the group or stay home. The route through the intercontinental playoffs has already vanished, and the reality is beginning to sting.
With 11 points on the board, Nigeria can only reach 17 if they win both of their remaining fixtures. That would have been fine in previous campaigns, but not this time. Elsewhere, Gabon and Madagascar have surged ahead with 19 points, while Burkina Faso and Cameroon sit just behind on 18. For Nigeria, that door has slammed shut.
It’s a situation born of inconsistency, moments of control undone by lapses in concentration, possession wasted in the final third, and an uneasy rhythm that’s left the team chasing shadows instead of leading from the front.

Super Eagles architects of their World Cup downfall
Nigeria’s hopes are hanging by the thinnest thread, and for the first time, they’re no longer in control of their own fate. To get past South Africa, the Bafana Bafana have to slip; two draws or a single defeat would do, while the Super Eagles must take care of their own business and win both games, with goal difference doing the rest.

South Africa’s run-in against Zimbabwe and Rwanda looks straightforward, but pressure does funny things when qualification is on the line.
Benin are the other obstacle, and their route is the harder one for Nigeria to influence. At first, they’ll need a favour, ideally Rwanda taking something off Benin in their penultimate fixture. The Super Eagles will then have to beat Gernot Rohr’s side in Uyo; that’s the bare minimum. That would open the door, but only slightly, and it could all come down to a single goal either way.
