Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has stated clearly what he wants to see from his team in their friendly fixture against Portugal tonight, Afrik Foot reports.
The 48-year-old took over as Nigeria’s head coach in January 2025 and has drilled a clear philosophy and pattern of play into the three-time African Champions, even drawing praise from Roberto Martinez of their encounter tonight.
Under Chelle, Nigeria have only lost a game outright, and that was the preparatory friendly clash against Egypt before the AFCON 2025 tournament.
Since then, the Super Eagles have gone unbeaten in 12 games, and will be looking to continue the same vein of form tonight at Estádio Dr Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, Portugal.

What Chelle wants from Super Eagles clash against Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo’s side are currently placed 5th in the latest FIFA rankings, the highest of any side Nigeria have played against under the Franco-Malian tactician.
Chelle’s aim for a game of this magnitude is not particularly about the result, but to see if his players can cope with the demands of playing against one of the best teams in the World.
The former RC Lens defender wants his players to stick to the philosophy he’s drilled into them, regardless of the opposition they come up against.

“Normally, this Portugal team have the ability to become the next World Cup Champions,” Chelle said in his pre-match conference.
“They have many big players in that team, and we’re very happy to play against them, because it is a big game.
“My only task now is to focus on my players, enforce the philosophy and our style of play like Wil [Ndidi] said.
“It’s not a question of the result. The most important objective is to improve at everything. We have to retain that mindset,” the Super Eagles coach concluded.
Can Nigeria adhere to Chelle’s plans?
In a spectacle that could serve as a quarter-final of a FIFA World Cup match, the Super Eagles will be without two of their biggest stars in Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.
However, the Unity Cup showed the ability of several new faces in the Super Eagles setup to quickly integrate into the demands of Nigeria’s coach.
The game against a technically superior side might test the patience of the players, who might be tempted to throw caution to the wind when things don’t go their way.

However, if the players keep their heads down and play the way Chelle has instructed since he became coach, the game against Portugal will be the biggest testament of the manager’s brilliance, and a good sign of things to come with the AFCON 2027 qualifiers on the horizon.
