Poverty protecting Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s interests at catastrophic Lazio

In his bid to find a place in the Lazio team for 2025/26, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has an unlikely ally.

The Nigeria international struggled for form and fitness in the latter half of the 2024/25 campaign, and is thought to be an awkward stylistic fit for returning boss Maurizio Sarri’s possession-based game.

However, while the former Chelsea and Juventus boss has stated that he is willing to give Dele-Bashiru a fair crack, it may be that he simply does not have a choice.

Lazio’s difficult financial situation: The implication for Dele-Bashiru

Due to missing out on European football altogether, the financial situation at Lazio is far from rosy. After failing financial health checks in March, the club was hit with a transfer embargo, and are entirely reliant on sales to finance any incomings. To boot, they are struggling to shift the players in the squad that they are willing to part with.

This has reportedly led to some friction between Lazio and Sarri, but also a realisation on the part of the 66-year-old that compromise is necessary.

Unable to recruit at all this summer, Lazio will have to rely on Dele-Bashiru, while hoping he adapts to Sarri’s ideology.
