Nwabali: Fans of PSL giants lament reported pursuit of Super Eagles no.1

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly preparing to re-enter the transfer market for Chippa United and Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali re-emerging as a potential target for January.

The Glamour Boys have struggled with consistency between the posts this season. Long-serving captain Itumeleng Khune faced disciplinary action earlier in the campaign, while both Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Pietersen failed to capitalize on their opportunities to cement the number one spot.

Chiefs’ signing of Rwandan international Ntwari has also backfired, as he has struggled to make an impact and subsequently lost his place in the starting XI.

During the previous transfer window, Nwabali was one of Chiefs' reported targets alongside Orlando Pirates, but Chippa United’s chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi, was believed to have set an asking price that deterred both sides.

However, Mpengesi later revealed that he had been willing to offload the Nigerian international to Amakhosi at a discounted fee.

Nwabali has performed steadily for Chippa United this season, featuring in 11 matches, conceding 10 goals, and keeping four clean sheets.

Despite his solid displays, Amakhosi fans have voiced concerns over their club’s reported decision to revisit the Nigerian shot-stopper.

Chiefs supporters have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to air their disapproval of a potential move for Nwabali, with many questioning his credentials and the club’s transfer strategy.

One fan said, “Nwabali isn’t even top three in South Africa. I’d rather take Djigui Diarra from Yanga SC.” Another wrote, “Signing foreign keepers isn’t economical, especially if they’re not top-quality. Chiefs should focus on local talent.”

The debate turned contentious as some comments took a xenophobic tone, with one user stating, “I don’t want to see a Nigerian goalkeeper at a top South African team.”
