Use and dump? Rangers looking to ditch Dessers for highly-rated Kosovan marksman

Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers could find minutes harder to come by next season at Rangers, with the Gers reportedly seeking to strengthen their attack with Kosovo international Albion Rrahmani.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement is said to be a long-time admirer of the 23-year-old FC Rapid București player, who made a total of 30 appearances throughout the 2023/24 season, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists.

The Romanian club, as per Football Fancast have placed a £6 million asking price on the centre-forward, who is also being pursued by Czech side Slavia Prague.

Challenging debut season for Cyriel Dessers

Dessers, since his arrival at Ibrox at the beginning of the 2023/24 season from Italian outfit Cremonese, has been the subject of criticism from the Gers faithful.

Despite his impressive statistics in front of goal in just his first season, there has been a sense from fans and pundits alike that the Nigeria international is not productive enough to lead the club's attack.

Manager Clement came out in defence of his centre-forward during the title run-in, and talked up Dessers' improvements and effort. “He is working really hard for the team, he is giving everything,” Clement said. “He changed the situation himself in a really good way… he has been working really hard to help the team, not only thinking about himself but to help the team.”

That statement of faith did little to assuage criticism, however, and it now appears that, given the opportunity, Clement is willing to explore his options ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Dessers scored 22 goals in all competitions for the Gers as they fell short in both their league and cup aspirations, losing out to fierce city rivals Celtic.

If, as is being reported, Rangers make good on their interest in the highly-rated Rrahmani, it could see the 29-year-old's playing time significantly diminish come next season despite what was, on the whole, a positive debut campaign at Ibrox.
