Rangers’ missed opportunity, El-Kanemi’s statement: Takeaways from Nigeria’s CAF weekend

Nigeria’s four representatives – Rangers, El Kanemi Warriors, Shooting Stars, and Rivers United – in the CAF inter-club competitions produced a mixed bag over the weekend, with two victories and two draws leaving plenty to discuss ahead of the return legs, Afrik-Foot reports.

Rivers United and Enugu Rangers both avoided defeat in the CAF Champions League, while Shooting Stars and El-Kanemi Warriors secured home wins in the Confederation Cup. But not all the results carried the same weight.

Here are the biggest takeaways from Nigeria’s opening weekend on the continent.

Rangers Wasted a Big Opportunity

Rangers International will look back at their 1-1 draw against AS Sobemap as a missed opportunity.

The Nigerian champions had home advantage in Abeokuta and took the lead through Chidozie Iwundu in the 32nd minute. But instead of building on that advantage, Rangers conceded early in the second half and could not find another goal to at least get a first-leg win.

However, the problem is not the draw itself. The problem is where Rangers dropped the points – at home.

They now have to travel to Benin Republic for the second leg on September 11, knowing that Sobemap have already shown they can hurt them.

For a team hoping to reach the Champions League group stage, Rangers will need a much sharper performance away from home. Their draw shows a major problem with Nigerian clubs, which is infrastructure. Rangers is an Enugu-based club, but they cannot play at home due to the poor state of their stadium.

If they were in front of their home fans in Enugu or even another South East state, they would likely have gotten the win, as most of their fans would have been present. So the players would have been buoyed by that. But they were over 400 kms from home in the South West.

Now, they will be travelling to a hostile environment for the second leg. It will be interesting to see if they survive.

El-Kanemi Made The Biggest Statement

If one Nigerian club impressed most this weekend, it was definitely El-Kanemi Warriors.

The Maiduguri-based side produced the most convincing result of the four Nigerian representatives, beating Guinea-Bissau’s UDIB 3-0 in Ikenne.

El Kanemi is the only safe club representing the country on the continent right now.

Nnamdi Mejuobi was the star, scoring twice in four minutes after the break. He opened the scoring in the 52nd minute before converting a penalty four minutes later, while Dayo Wahab added a third late in the game.

The result puts El-Kanemi firmly in control of the tie. It is also significant because the club was relegated from the NPFL last season. Their return to continental football could hardly have started better.

Rivers United Showed Character

Rivers United’s 1-1 draw at FC San Pedro was arguably the most valuable result of the weekend.

Unlike Rangers, Finidi George’s side played away from home and recovered after Issouf Dosso put the Ivorian hosts ahead in the 55th minute.

Substitute Iyowuna Douglas equalised in the 69th minute, just three minutes after entering the game, to earn Rivers United a crucial draw away from home.

The result leaves the tie perfectly poised for the second leg in Uyo on September 13.

Rivers United will now have home advantage in Nigeria and the confidence of knowing they have already handled San Pedro’s biggest test on their own ground.

Shooting Stars Have a Slim Advantage

Shooting Stars also gave themselves something to defend after beating CS Sfaxien 1-0 in Abeokuta.

Lucky Emmanuel scored the only goal in the 25th minute, while the Ibadan side’s defence held firm to preserve the advantage.

It is an important win against a club with way better continental pedigree, but the job is far from finished.

Shooting Stars must now protect that narrow lead in Tunisia, where the four-time Confederation Cup winners will have home advantage. North African clubs are usually brutal on home turf, and that part of the continent has always been a bad hunting ground for Nigerian teams. It will be a big one of they leave CS Sfaxien unscathed.

For Nigeria, though, the opening weekend provided plenty of encouragement.

El-Kanemi have the clearest advantage, Rivers United have a valuable away draw, and Shooting Stars have a narrow lead, but will have a big battle if they want to maintain their place. Rangers also have a lot of work to do.

All four ties remain alive, but the return legs will reveal whether Nigeria’s positive start can translate into four clubs advancing to the next round.
