Transfer: 5 Super Eagles free agents who could be perfect for NPFL clubs

The 2026/27 NPFL season is already underway, with clubs battling for points after the opening two matchdays, Afrik-Foot reports.

The league kicked off on August 28, and the campaign carries added financial importance after the champions’ prize money was raised to N1 billion.

That makes the idea of bringing experienced Nigerian internationals home more interesting. Transfermarkt’s free-agent list includes several players who have played at major European clubs and for the Super Eagles. Five names stand out as realistic football fits for ambitious NPFL sides, even if their salaries and ambitions could make such deals difficult.

A return would also carry a deeper meaning for some of them. Ighalo, Omeruo, Aminu and Agbo all started their senior journeys in Nigeria before moving abroad. A final chapter in the NPFL could give them a chance to pass on experience while helping strengthen the league that helped launch their careers.

Super Eagles free agents who could transform the NPFL

Odion Ighalo

At 37, Super Eagles icon Ighalo would be the headline signing. The former Watford and Manchester United striker started his professional career with Prime and Julius Berger before moving to Norway in 2007.

His résumé since then includes Udinese, Granada, Watford, Changchun Yatai, Shanghai Shenhua, Al-Shabab, Al-Hilal and Al-Wehda. He scored 31 goals in 40 appearances for Al-Hilal and finished his Saudi career with 73 league goals.

In Ighalo, an NPFL club would be bringing in a player who has scored in the Premier League, UEFA competitions and the Saudi Pro League. His experience could also help younger Nigerian forwards learn how to play the position.

Anthony Nwakaeme

Nwakaeme’s case is different. The 37-year-old is a wide attacker who spent much of his career in Romania, Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

His strongest years came at Trabzonspor. Across two spells, he made 193 appearances, scoring 50 goals and providing 48 assists. His 2021/22 campaign was especially impressive, with 13 league goals and 10 assists as Trabzonspor won the Turkish title.

His contract expired in June 2026, making him one of the more experienced attacking options available. An NPFL club would be getting a player capable of operating from the wing or centrally, plus a dressing-room leader with years of European experience.

Kenneth Omeruo

Omeruo is perhaps the clearest example of a Nigerian league player who successfully used the NPFL as a launchpad. He played for Sunshine Stars before joining Standard Liège and then Chelsea in 2012. He never made a senior Chelsea appearance, but played in the Netherlands, England, Turkey and Spain, including 86 league appearances for Leganés.

The 32-year-old has 69 Nigeria caps and was part of the Super Eagles’ 2013 AFCON-winning team. His return could be especially valuable to an NPFL club seeking defensive leadership and continental experience.

There is also a personal connection. Omeruo previously donated training equipment to Sunshine Stars and spoke about wanting to give back to the club that helped launch his career.

Aminu Umar

Umar offers a younger option at 31. The winger came through Wikki Tourists before moving to Samsunspor in Turkey in 2013. He later played for Osmanlıspor and Çaykur Rizespor, among others.

His best period came at Osmanlıspor, where he scored 22 league goals in 101 appearances. He also played in the 2016 Olympics and earned four senior Nigeria caps.

An NPFL return would give a club a winger with overseas experience who knows Nigerian football and could still contribute pace and attacking movement.

Uche Agbo

Agbo’s journey began with Taraba, JUTH and Enyimba before he moved to Udinese in 2013. His career later took him to Granada, Watford, Standard Liège, Rayo Vallecano, Braga, Deportivo La Coruña, Slovan Bratislava and Aktobe.

The 30-year-old can play defensive midfield or centre-back, making him one of the most useful players on this list. Standard Liège credited him with strong ball-winning ability after he played 58 games and won the Belgian Cup with the club.

A return to Nigeria could give an NPFL side tactical flexibility while allowing Agbo to finish the circle that began with Enyimba.
