Raphael Onyedika finally got the move he had been waiting for, joining Eintracht Frankfurt after spending four years at Club Brugge, Afrik-Foot reports.

After months of speculation and interest from clubs across Europe, the Super Eagles midfielder completed a permanent switch from the Belgian side to the Bundesliga, signing a five-year contract until 2031.

While Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad also showed interest earlier in the transfer window, Onyedika made it clear that his priority was returning to one of Europe’s top leagues. His first interview as an Eintracht Frankfurt player revealed exactly why.

Quizzed about why he joined the Eagles, development was the first word that came out of Onyedika’s mouth.

“It’s an amazing club, a fantastic club, I follow them a lot in the past years, so it’s the right place for my development,” the 25-year-old.

At 25, Onyedika has already outgrown Belgian football. During four successful seasons with Club Brugge, he established himself as one of the league’s most consistent midfielders, winning two Belgian Pro League titles, a Belgian Cup and becoming a regular in the UEFA Champions League.

Yet, the Bundesliga represents an entirely different challenge. Eintracht Frankfurt have developed a reputation as one of Germany’s best talent incubators. The club has consistently helped players make the leap from promising prospects to elite performers before moving on to Europe’s big clubs.

Recent examples include Omar Marmoush, Randal Kolo Muani, Willian Pacho and Hugo Ekitiké, all of whom significantly built their reputations in Frankfurt before making big moves.

For a midfielder like Onyedika, whose game relies on tactical intelligence and defensive awareness, the Bundesliga’s intensity appears an ideal fit.

Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche echoed that belief when announcing the signing.

He described Onyedika as a player with “exceptional consistency,” highlighting both his international experience and “great potential for development.”

“Raphael Onyedika has not only impressed us with his physicality and strategic understanding of the game, but above all with his extraordinary consistency. At 25, he still has great potential and is an important building block in terms of the structure of our squad.”

That combination explains why Frankfurt were willing to pursue him for two years before finally completing the deal.

Rather than taking a financially lucrative move away from Europe’s spotlight, Onyedika has chosen a club where regular Bundesliga football could take his game to another level.

2. He believes Frankfurt share his ambition

Development alone did not convince Onyedika. His second reason was equally telling.

“The ambition is to bring the club back to the top where they belong, and the fans can expect me to give 100%.”

Eintracht Frankfurt have established themselves as one of Germany’s strongest clubs over the past decade, winning the UEFA Europa League in 2022 and regularly challenging for European qualification.

His career reflects that winning mentality. Since leaving FC Midtjylland, where he lifted the Danish Cup, Onyedika has collected domestic silverware in Belgium while becoming one of Nigeria’s regular midfielders.

Joining another ambitious club allows him to continue competing for trophies while testing himself against some of Europe’s strongest opposition every week.
