Samuel Chukwueze: Key reason Ruben Amorim wants Nigerian winger to stay at Milan

Published on by

Ruben Amorim has publicly confirmed that Samuel Chukwueze will remain at AC Milan, delivering a pointed endorsement of the Super Eagles winger, Afrik Foot reports.

The 27-year-old’s future at Milan had been the subject of transfer speculation after Fulham declined the opportunity to submit an offer following the conclusion of his loan spell at Craven Cottage.

Trabzonspor submitted a €15 million offer that Chukwueze rejected in favour of fighting for his place under the new Portuguese head coach, Ruben Amorim.

Amorim’s arrival at the San Siro has brought with it a tactical framework that, on early evidence, suits Chukwueze’s strengths directly.

The Nigerian returned to Milan after spending his off-season in Uyo, where he was photographed encouraging young footballers in the community that shaped him, and joined Amorim’s pre-season preparations.

A loan spell at Fulham last season produced three goals and four assists in 23 Premier League appearances. Chukwueze came back to Milan with something to prove. Amorim, it now appears, will give him the platform to prove it.

What Amorim said about Samuel Chukwueze’s role at Milan

During his pre-season press conference, Amorim was asked directly about squad needs and whether he had reassessed certain players from the tenure of the former coach.

His answer on Chukwueze was clear, and the Portuguese coach revealed what he sees in the Nigerian winger.

“There are some players who weren’t here last year. Chukwueze is staying with us — we need players who can play one-on-one,” Amorim said in quotes revealed by Siempre Milan.

“Chukwueze has great qualities and gives us alternatives. Before looking outside, let’s look carefully inside.

“If they play well, if they absorb my ideas, then we’ll find a place for them.”

Amorim’s 3-4-3 at Sporting CP was built around wide players who could beat their man in individual duels, create overloads in transition and attack defenders directly rather than through short, intricate passes. Chukwueze, at his best, is exactly that player

The key reason Amorim wants Chukwueze to stay at Milan

The reason is clearly tactical. Amorim has built his system around a requirement that Chukwueze fulfils better than most alternatives available in the transfer market.

The Portuguese coach has been explicit about his preference for evaluating internal options before considering the transfer market, and his endorsement of Chukwueze as a player who “gives us alternatives” and “has great qualities” is the language of a manager who sees genuine utility in the Nigerian rather than a problem to be managed or moved on.

Unlike the previous managers at Milan who did not always maximise his natural qualities, Amorim is building a framework where the ability to beat a defender, run in behind and create danger from the flank is valued and demanded.

For the first time since leaving Villarreal, Chukwueze finds himself in an environment where his best attribute in one-on-one situations is the foundation of what his coach wants.

The challenge now is to absorb Amorim’s defensive demands with the same commitment that makes him attractive offensively.

The set-piece delivery that Amorim prizes, the pressing discipline his system requires and the tactical discipline across a full season all remain the areas where Chukwueze must grow.

But for the first time in three years at the San Siro, the manager’s language suggests a player being built around rather than accommodated. That is the key reason Amorim wants him to stay.

If it works out with the former Manchester United coach, Chukwueze would’ve been right to turn down Trabzonspor for another shot at AC Milan.
