Stanley Iheanacho rejoins FC Midtjylland: Can Nigerian youngster emulate Paul Onuachu?

Four-time Danish Champions FC Midtjylland have confirmed the return of Nigerian striker Stanley Iheanacho, who has signed a deal that will keep him at the club until 2030, Afrik Foot reports.

The transfer sees the 21-year-old seal a return to the place where his European journey first began.

The striker previously featured for Midtjylland’s U19 side during the 2023/24 campaign, where he scored 12 goals in 22 appearances and caught the eye with two goals in four UEFA Youth League games.

After spending two seasons in Portugal with C.D. Mafra, where he scored 17 goals in 63 appearances, Midtjylland have decided the time is right to bring him back into their first team.

For a club that several Nigerian players have used as a launchpad for their careers, Iheanacho has already drawn comparisons to Paul Onuachu.

Midtjylland’s sporting director, Kristian Bach Bak, made it clear that Stanley’s return is built on progress, not sentiment.

According to the 43-year-old, the Nigerian has matured significantly during his spell in Portugal, and he also praised his mentality, describing him as positive and hardworking.

“Stanley is still a young kid who came from home very early soon. He travelled from Nigeria to Denmark and then from Denmark to Portugal,” the former Midtjylland defender said in quotes revealed by the club’s official website.

“He has taken some steps in relation to senior football over the two years he has been in Mafra. Initially, he was a small part of the team and had to fight himself for playing time, but last season contributed with goals and assists, and played a big part. He has matured.

“Stanley is a great person. He is lovely positive and happy, and as a player he has a really high top speed. He is very dynamic in his style of play, moves a lot and is aggressive in the pressure.

“He works hard and then he has the lovely attribute that he can score goals,” Bach Bak concluded.

For Stanley himself, the decision to return was straightforward. The striker described Midtjylland as the “springboard” of his career, admitting his first spell at the club laid the foundation for his development in Europe.

“I see it as a good opportunity for me to switch to FC Midtjylland. I really enjoyed my time here when I was playing at the academy. It was like my springboard and the start of my career.

“I managed to make my first team debut, which I am incredibly happy about, but at that time the good decision for me was to switch to Mafra.

“I got some game time and had a really good season at the latest. Now I have the feeling that the next step for me is to switch back to FC Midtjylland and hopefully get game time here and continue my development.

“I know a lot of people in the team already, as several of them that I played with on the U19 team and in Mafra are now playing in the first team. I look forward to joining the club again, hopefully winning titles and playing in the Europa League,” Stanley Iheanacho said.

Can Stanley Iheanacho emulate Paul Onuachu’s goalscoring record at Midtjylland?

Onuachu broke into the first team at Midtjylland in 2015 at the same age, 21, and left four years later as one of the club’s most successful strikers. Across 149 appearances, he scored 65 goals and registered four assists, helping the club win two Danish Superliga titles and one Danish Cup.

His time in Denmark became the foundation for his rise into one of Europe’s most prolific Nigerian strikers. Since Onuachu’s success, Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika have also gone on to do great things after leaving the Danish side.

Stanley’s numbers are still far behind that level. His 17 goals in 63 matches for Mafra suggest promise, but not yet the kind of dominance Onuachu showed in Denmark.

Additionally, both players, despite playing the same position, are of different profiles. Onuachu, standing at 6 ft 7 in, is a traditional target man, physically dominant, aerially exceptional, and a fox in the box, while Stanley, who’s also quite tall (6 ft 1 in), appears to be relying more on speed, pressing intensity, and off-the-ball movement.

That difference could actually work in his favour as Mike Tullberg’s tactics demand more fluidity from their forwards than they did during Onuachu’s era, aligning naturally with Stanley’s strengths.
