Stanley Nwabali appreciates Super Eagles teammates as European clubs show interest

Stanley Nwabali was hailed as the hero of the night as he saved two penalties, securing a sweet victory for the Super Eagles of Nigeria over Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a semi-final clash of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) on Wednesday.

That win not only secured victory for the Super Eagles, it also ensured their first AFCON final appearance since 2013.

Nigerian skipper William Troost-Ekong gave the three-time AFCON champions the lead, but his goal was cancelled out by Bafana Bafana midfielder Tebeho Mokoena in the dying moments of the game, sending it to extra time and subsequently to the penalty shoot-outs.

With his heroics, the Nigeria and Chippa United number one was adjudged the Man-of-the-match.

Looking back at their experience at AFCON 2024, Nwabali expressed gratitude for the collective effort that propelled the team forward.

“It has been a good team performance throughout this tournament…” Nwabali emphasised, highlighting the cohesive efforts on the field. He extended his appreciation to the management and coaching staff for their guidance and support, recognising their crucial role in the team's success.

“… and  I really appreciate the management and coaches.”

As the tournament unfolded, the 27-year-old found himself uplifted by the camaraderie and mentorship within the team.

“These guys have really guided me a lot throughout this tournament,” Nwabali reflected gratefully, recognising the impact of his teammates' encouragement on his performance.

Peseiro's visit, a source of motivation for Nwabali

Previously unnoticed by many until AFCON 2024, Nwabali has emerged as a revelation for the Super Eagles, showcasing remarkable skill and athleticism. His agility and quick reactions are finely honed, nearly flawless.

According to the Chippa United shot-stopper, when he received the unexpected news of Jose Peseiro's visit, it sparked a profound sense of anticipation and motivation within him.

The prospect of a visit from the esteemed coach was more than just a routine occurrence; it was a validation of his hard work and dedication.

“When the coach [Jose Peseiro] informed me he was coming to visit [at Chippa], for me it was one of the biggest things. A coach to come visit was a motivation. When he said he was coming I was really pleased,” He recalled with enthusiasm.

Several clubs chase after Nwabali's signature

Stanley Nwabali's representative has verified his imminent departure from Chippa United, revealing interest from European and Saudi Arabian clubs in acquiring the services of the Super Eagles goalkeeper.

Mohammed Nawal, the player's agent, dispelled speculation regarding a potential transfer to Kaizer Chiefs.
