Stephen Fumen Michael has gone from Danish club football to the Super Eagles picture at just 19, with Eric Chelle handing the young midfielder a place in Nigeria’s 24-man squad for the October 6 friendly against Russia, Afrik-Foot reports.

Michael was born on December 14, 2006, and plays for Vendsyssel FF in Denmark. He stands 1.76 metres tall, is right-footed and wears No. 8 for his club. His Vendsyssel contract runs until June 30, 2028.

The youngster is part of the group selected for Nigeria’s October 6 friendly against 2018 World Cup hosts Russia. Chelle is using the Russia fixture to examine younger players as he builds towards Nigeria’s Olympic programme.

His involvement has grown during the current campaign.

Michael has made 10 official appearances and 798 minutes for Vendsyssel in the 2026/27 season so far. This includes nine appearances in the Danish First Division for the young midfielder, with his latest outing coming in the 2-2 draw away to Aalborg BK on September 20.

He played 78 minutes in that match before being substituted. His previous four league appearances included 90 minutes against Randers, 64 minutes against AaB, 90 minutes against Vejle and 90 minutes against Hillerød.

With Michael already playing senior football rather than arriving in the national team solely on youth potential, he could be one of those to earn good minutes against Russia.

What are Michael’s strengths?

Michael often receives applause for his defensive work, ball retention and mobility. The youngster boasts an healthy duel-win rate, dribbles well even in tight spaces and is rarely dispossessed of the ball.

His passing figures suggest he can help a team keep the ball, while his defensive numbers indicate an ability to contribute when possession is lost. He also has enough mobility to cover ground in midfield.

At 19, however, those numbers should be treated as an early snapshot rather than proof that he has completed his development.
