Highly rated Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor has officially become an Italian citizen, a major step that could shape his international future, Afrik-Foot reports.
The decision, as confirmed by La Repubblica, now makes him eligible to represent Italy at all levels, including the senior national team.
The move has come at an important time. Italy are preparing for a crucial World Cup play-off match against Northern Ireland later this month, and Ahanor is already being considered as part of their wider plans.
He has previously been included in preliminary squads for both the senior side and the Under-21 team, showing how highly he is rated within Italian football.

This moment also fulfils a childhood dream for Ahanor. While growing up and playing football in Genoa, he had always expressed his desire to represent Italy one day. Now, that dream is close to becoming reality.
The 18-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise since joining Atalanta BC from Genoa in July 2025 for around €20 million. Since then, he has become one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe.
This season, Ahanor has played 27 matches across all competitions, including important games in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League. He has shown great maturity for his age, playing mainly as a centre-back but also filling in as a left wing-back when needed.
One of his standout moments came in September 2025, when he became the youngest Italian player ever to start a Champions League match at just 17 years and 219 days.

His style of play has also impressed many. He is calm on the ball, with a very high passing accuracy, and strong in defence. His pace and physical strength have made him reliable at the back, while his ability to read the game has stood out for such a young player.
Former Atalanta manager Ivan Jurić has praised him for his ‘great contribution at the back,’ and several top clubs across Europe are already monitoring his progress.
Ahanor: Nigeria setback as Chelle’s long-term plan takes a hit
Ahanor’s decision to commit his future to Italy is a big setback for Nigeria’s Super Eagles who had been hoping to secure his international allegiance.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle had been closely monitoring the young defender. He was seen as a long-term option who could strengthen Nigeria’s defence for years to come.

With his ability to play in multiple defensive roles and his calm style on the ball, Ahanor fitted perfectly into the kind of modern defender Nigeria are trying to develop. Losing him now means Chelle and his team must look elsewhere for future defensive solutions.
Italy, on the other hand, are in a tense situation as they prepare for their World Cup play-offs.
After finishing second in their qualifying group, they must win two knockout matches to reach the 2026 tournament. The first of those games is against Northern Ireland, with a potential final against either Wales or Bosnia to follow. Failure would mean Italy miss a third straight World Cup, something that would be a huge shock for a four-time champion.
Because of that pressure, Italy are looking to blend experienced players with young talents like Ahanor. His inclusion in their plans shows just how much faith they have in his ability to handle big moments.
