Super Eagles transfer: Why Awaziem could be next Nigeria star to join Osimhen in Turkey

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem could be the latest Nigerian footballer to continue his career in Turkey after reports claimed Turkish Super Lig club Konyaspor have started talks over a summer move, Afrik-Foot reports.

According to Turkish journalist Resat Can Özbudak, Konyaspor have made the Nigerian centre-back a priority defensive target ahead of the 2026-27 season. It is believed that discussions have already held to understand his current situation and the possibility of completing a transfer before the window closes.

Awaziem only joined French club Nantes last summer with the hope of helping the Canaries remain in Ligue 1, following the departure of compatriot Moses Simon to Paris FC. However, despite producing several solid displays throughout the campaign, the Nigerian international could not stop the club from being relegated to Ligue 2.

The 29-year-old featured in 26 league matches, scored once and provided two assists while regularly playing an important role in both defence and attack. Although Awaziem impressed individually, Nantes struggled collectively throughout the campaign. Their relegation has now created fresh uncertainty around several senior players, with the club reportedly preparing for a major rebuild before the new Ligue 2 season.

Reports in France suggest Nantes are also dealing with financial pressure following their relegation. As a result, the club is expected to sell several first-team players this summer to reduce costs and generate funds as they attempt to earn an immediate return to France’s top division.

Remaining in top-flight football appears to be a priority for Awaziem, making the Turkish Super Lig.

Turkey becoming a familiar home for Super Eagles stars

If the move goes through, Awaziem would join a growing list of Nigerian footballers already in Turkish football.

Victor Osimhen is Nigeria’s most recognisable name in the country. The Galatasaray and Super Eagles vice-captain completed a record move to Galatasaray last year after his successful spell at the club. The Barcelona-linked forward has been appointed captain by the Istanbul giants ahead of the new season.

Trabzonspor also continue to rely heavily on Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, although the prolific forward has attracted transfer interest after another productive campaign. His teammate Chibuike Nwaiwu has also been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Fulham reportedly showing strong interest in signing the defender.

Elsewhere, Kelechi Iheanacho has surprisingly joined newly promoted division two Bursaspor on a permanent deal, while Lesley Ugochukwu is spending the season at Galatasaray after arriving from Burnley on a loan agreement that includes a future purchase obligation.

More Nigerians could join them in the coming days. Gift Orban is aiming to revive his career at Amedspor as he is on the verge of joining on loan from Hoffenheim, Peter Olayinka is closing in on a return to the Turkish top flight as a free agent, while Peter Oghenekaro Etebo continues his recovery at Gençlerbirliği with his contract there running until 2027.
